Once again looking back into my cd rom vault found me pictures that should be in my blog for you and me, This is on historical Verdun, a wonderful city in to visit anytime. There are some nice monuments here that should be visited, too many need to be back, eventually, The City of Verdun is;located in the Meuse department no, 55, in the Grand Est region of my belle France. Therefore, here is my take on curiosities of Verdun !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I
The city retains traces of the Grand Rempart or large bulwark, a fortified 5C enclosure which surrounded the City,
We walked along the quai de Londres to see the Porte Chaussée ! or gate aka Tour Chaussée or tower, is a city gate in Verdun ,built in 1380 along the Meuse river redesigned in 1690, it served as a state military prison from 1755 to 1860 before being bought by the city in 1889. One of the three monumental gates of the Great Rampart of Verdun. The monument is composed of two circular twin towers crowned with battlements 20 meters high, their outer walls are almost 2 meters thick. They are connected by a portico comprising a semicircular portal surmounted by a Tuscan pediment. The monument is Gothic in style, decorated with gargoyles and trefoil carvings. (see pic far on left)

To the right of the above see the Monument aux Enfants de Verdun morts pour la France or Monument to the Children of Verdun Who Died for France, It rests upon the demi-lune of the Chaussée, whose construction was ordered by Marshal Vauban in the 17C. It stands on the site of the military slaughterhouse destroyed in 1916. This war memorial represents the five branches of the French army engaged during the Battle of Verdun in 1916. From left to right, one can distinguish: a cavalryman, a sapper, an infantryman (aka “Poilu”), an artilleryman, and a territorial soldier. These five soldiers form a wall symbolizing the motto of Verdun: “They shall not pass.” At the foot of the monument are inscribed the names of the soldiers who died during the Great War or WWI and WWII. Verdun is primarily known as the site of the First World War battlefield, which I visited with interest and emotion. I will have to return to explore the city, which I only drove through.
