The town of Thuré is full of beautiful architecture, wonderful history, and just plain beautiful facades to enjoy it for long. Another jewel of my belle France, We were on our road warrior trails and passed by briefly by the church, Therefore, let me tell you on this is Thuré !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I,
The town of Thuré is located in the Vienne department 86 of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of my belle France. It is located 8 km from Châtellerault, 33 km from Poitiers, 37 km from Chauvigny, 173 km from Nantes, 280 km from Versailles, and 309 km from my current home, I came on the N165 dir Nantes, then the D149 road dir Clisson /Brssuire, to take the D725 road dir Airvault getting on the D938 same road dir Mirebeau changing to D725 numbers to Thuré.
The Church Saint Pierre facade is from the 12C and the nave is from the same century. The church has preserved its 12C and 14C origins, including the choir, transept, portal, and east façade. The Romanesque apse was recently restored. The door of the dead is so named because it was used by coffin bearers. The façade is simple. It is decorated with an oculus and features an 18C narthex, a rare architectural feature in the Poitou region.

The apse is Romanesque. It has three bays surmounted by arches decorated with friezes, featuring a “nailhead” motif. They are framed by columns with capitals. The modillions are decorated with human heads or monsters. The nave dates from the 15C. It was rebuilt after the Hundred Years’ War. It has three bays with ribbed vaults. Two chapels from the 16-17C open on either side of the central nave at the level of the third bay. The wooden pulpit dates from the 18C. It is supported by a stone corbel. It is placed at the junction of the nave and the transept.

Other things to see here are the numerous old underground tuffeau quarries within the municipal territory. They are located on the hillside overlooking the village, to the north. In 1869, they were located at the following locations: Pierre-Godeau, Puydonneau, Les Blots, Les Pichereaux, La Massardière, Les Plantes, and Le Germon. The Château de la Massardière dates from the 15-16C. Once through the fortified gate, one discovers a beautiful manor house, whose buildings are connected by a gallery built around the 1520s. Remains of the fortified castle of the bishops of Poitiers are located south of the square, in a courtyard. The outbuildings date from the 17C, and the tower from the 15C. The Château de La Barbelinière is a characteristic 17C bourgeois house located at 9 Place de la Liberté.
A bit of history tell us that before 1790, the parish of Thuré was part of the archpriesthood, the duchy, the seneschal’s court, and the election of Châtellerault. The lordship of Thuré, formerly the domain of the bishops of Poitiers, was ceded on May 21, 1447, by Bishop Guillaume de Charpaigne to Charles of Anjou, Count of Maine, along with the lands of Saint-Christophe-sous-Faye and the Tower of Oyré, and the tithe of Senillé, in exchange for the castle and castellany of Harcourt in Chauvigny. This fief, called a barony since the 16C, was part of the Duchy of Châtellerault. In 1768, it was united with the Marquisate of Clairvaux, along with the four fiefs of Grand-Pouillé, the Tower of Pouillé, La Plante, and La Perlotière. Thuré welcomed the advances of the French revolution. The town thus planted the Tree of Liberty, a symbol of the revolution. It became the rallying point for all the festivals and major revolutionary events, such as the ceremony in honor of the French ambassadors killed during the Second Congress of Rastadt. As a symbol, it was attacked during the royalist reaction of 1799.
