The Lavoir Saint Leonard of Honfleur, part II !!

Well I think I have spoken enough on Honfleur, as is a very sentimental town for me and going there since the early 90’s. I will never be tired of seeing it. This is as Norman as you can get in the Calvados dept 14 of the Normandie region of my belle France, There is so much I have written on it in my blog, but there is always some that me think not written enough and they deserve more. Therefore, here is my take on the Lavoir Saint Leonard of Honfleur, part II !! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

Many towns/villages inFrance have a wash house orLavoir, a small building often overlooked by its own residents. These buildings were generally built during the 19C to limit the risk of an epidemic. We love to walk by here each time in town. Nearby, the fountain and the washhouse are places conducive to relaxation, fed by the Saint Léonard spring, they remind us that Honfleur has its feet in the water! This district is home to the tourist office, media library and the St Leonard Church 12C (see post). This is a very quant old neighborhood to lose yourselves walking and marveling at the sights of architecture and history all around you.

A few steps from the old basin or vieux bassin, the Saint-Léonard district groups its houses at the foot of a church dating from the 12C. This district experienced strong development during the second half of the 19C due to its proximity to industries, basins and the railway station. This development necessitated the creation of a fountain and a wash house or lavoir (see post) supplied by the Saint Léonard spring. Fed by the sources of the Côte Vassal, it is the oldest washhouse in the city. It was restored in 1807.

And remember, happy travels, good health, and many cheers to all !!!
