The Palais Bénédictine of Fécamp ,part III !!!

Again on my ever ending search, found me older new pictures to the blog in my cd rom vault that should be here for you and me, We came to Fécamp, and it was a blast !! Fécamp is located in the Seine-Maritime department 76 in the Normandie region of my belle France. We parked by the Quai Berigny to walked to the hugely beautiful Palais Bénédictine , a must to visit, Therefore, let me tell you again on the Palais Bénédictine of Fécamp, part III !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Benedictine Palace is discovered from all angles. On the program: a free visit to the museum, with its collection of ancient and sacred art and its exhibition on the contemporary history of Benedictine, a guided tour of the distillery and the cellars, and a commented tasting. For its 150th anniversary, the establishment renovates the Gothic and Renaissance rooms, and the oratory. The route begins with the exploration of the museum , and which also presents its industrial history.

In the more classic part, the museum has a large collection of art from the 14-16C, partly from the personal collections of the founder, represented in the center of a large stained glass window in the glorious renovator of the liqueur who made his fortune, There is also a gallery of contemporary art exhibitions open to the public.

The museum is made up of rooms devoted to ancient and medieval art, many elements from the old abbey. They contain various collections of enamels and ivories, the library comes in part from the abbey of Fécamp, a collection of ironwork- acquired in a castle in Val-de-Loire- paintings, mostly on wood, formerly Attributed to French, Italian, German and Flemish artists, precise Germans, somewhat arbitrary attributions. These are mainly works of workshops or “the school of”. The library exhibits manuscripts and incunable, champlevé enamels of the 16C, reliquaries, sculpted ivories, of ancient ironwork.

The central room is the salle des Abbés or abbots room, whose main interest lies in its stained glass window, representing the reception of King François I by the monks of Fécamp in 1534 and the statues of certain abbots which marked the Abbey of Fécamp.

A bit of history tell us that in 1510 at Fécamp Abbey, (see post) ,the Benedictine monk Dom Bernardo Vincelli would have created a successful secret elixir: the ancestor of “Benedictine” liqueur. Ancestor, because it would have been produced only in this abbey until his recipe is lost, during the French revolution. It was not until the end of the 19C that a wine merchant, and the local Alexandre le Grand, found it, deciphering it and launched the Benedictine liquor. He then built the Benedictine Palace, an architectural masterpiece of Gothic and Renaissance inspiration, to offer a prestigious setting to the only Benedictine distillery in the world, still in operation today, and to its collection of works of art.
