The Basilica Saint Martin of Tours, part II !!!

The City of Tours is located on the dept no 37 of the Indre-et-Loir in the Centre Val de Loire region of my belle France. This is the Loire valley of the kings, and the purest French language according to scholars. I have passed and been in Tours several times, However, I came mostly for the architecture and the history and the wines of the Loire. But again, fell that had not given the merit it deserves to these wonderful monuments in previous posts, and since found me old new pictures to the blog that should be in it, Therefore, here is more of the wonderful Basilica Saint Martin of Tours, part II !!! As an anecdote ,Tours sometimes is call the Little Paris by visitors because maybe for its history, the architectural arrangement of its boulevards in the center town and buildings in white stone ,nice and clean silhouettes. Another beauty of my belle France. This is the which is a major work of art and a very intense religious building indeed. The city is linked very easily to Paris by train with good parking and even connection to the TGV station outside in St Pierre des Corps. Wonderful road takes you there easy too like we take the D952 along the Loire river. We like to park by Nationale underground parking. You can take from Paris the A10 or the A11 to Le Mans and then the A28 down to Tours. tours-basilica-st-martin-altar-feb18 The current basilica was built between 1886 and 1902 by the Touraine native architect, Victor Laloux, just a short distance away from the vestiges of the medieval basilica. This Neo-Byzantine basilica was built on the tomb of Saint Martin, found in 1860 and sheltered in a crypt that still attracts numerous pilgrims.  The Basilica Saint-Martin , where diocesan priests and a community of Benedictines of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre welcome you all year round. Born over 1,700 years ago, Martin wanted to live the Gospel, be a monk, poor and forgotten. A craftsman of charity, he met and faced evil in all its forms; Evangelizing through Europe, he spread the faith. Its kindness has remained engraved in hearts and memories. At the beginning of the 21C, the walls of the basilica which was built on its grave intended to speak many languages ,who come to solicit the intercession of the saint near his tomb … tours-basilica-st-martin-back-garden-feb18 The body of Saint Martin, who died in Candes, was transported toTours and modestly buried on 11 November 397, three days after his death, in a Christian cemetery outside the city, on the verge of the Roman road to the west. According to Gregory of Tours, Bishop Brice built a wooden building in 437 to house the tomb and the Mantle of Saint Martin, called for this reason a Chapel. Instead the first Basilica of Saint Martin’s Tomb, whose dedication took place in 470, Martin’s body was buried in a sarcophagus behind the altar of the new Basilica.
