Let me tell you more in depth of a little town in my road warrior trips thru the Pyrénées between my beloved France and Spain. It has been many trips by it for many years lost count even in years when there was no tunnels up the peaks and down and back. We had many good times with the boys, my parents, and my dear late wife Martine. We decided on one trip to get off the road to Spain and see a bit of the countryside in this valley of the Ossau on the run with the mountains in front to small village of Assouste. Let me tell a bit on this wonderful find on the Pyrénées Atlantique dept 64 of the Nouvelle Aquitaine region of my belle France, Therefore, this is Assouste !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.
The small village of Assouste is 4 km from Eaux-Bonnes, 3 km from Laruns,57 km from Urdos, 40 km from Pau, 107 km from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, 200 km from San Sebastian (Spain), 828 km from Versailles and 738 km from my current home, This was on our way to Spain stopping for rest in Pau and then continue on the D934 to just before Laruns take a ride into the D240E by Béost becomes the D391 to Assouste and the chapel passing by it, Assouste is a village of about twenty inhabitants, part of the town of Eaux-Bonnes since 1861. It has been located on the side of the Green Mountain in Ossau valley (Haut-Béarn) on the right bank of Gave d’Ossau river. It dominates the city of Laruns. The village remained one of the smallest in the valley in the 18C, the village had eleven houses, only five of which were Cazalères the so -called Cazalères houses were those on the land of the other houses had been built.

We passed by the little Chapelle Notre Dame de l’Assomption, a little gem of Romanesque art of the 12C, is probably the oldest in the valley. The chapel only 2 km from Eaux-Bonnes is on the itinerary of Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage, Artists probably carved corbels of the apse, thecCapitals of the portal and the delicate tympanum which two angels hold a Christ.
