The beach of Deauville !!!

Let me tell you about classic Deauville one of the most chic of French cities and is not in the south riviera! This is Normandie at its best , and we like it. This is glitzy and old charm town but it is very famous with the upper class and under, I found me more pics in my cd rom vault and should be here for you and me, Do read my other posts on the City, Therefore, here is my take on the beach of Deauville !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.

The City of Deauville in the Department 14 of Calvadosin the region of Normandie and in my belle France. It is 17 km from Honfleur (many times on this route), 93 km from Rouen, 190 km from Versailles, and 356 km from my current home, It is considered, with its casino, its palaces, its classic villas, its racing fields, its marinas, its convention center, its American film Festival, its golfs and its discotheques, and the beach as one of the most prestigious city in France.

We came here passing many years ago on our way to Honfleur (see posts), and took a peek. Well as, the saying goes, the rest is history. Many times over and wonderful beautiful beach. A superb sandy beach stretching from the yacht harbour to the Ammonites beach in Benerville, it is steeped in history. 2 km of beach, 450 parasols, 450 cabins, an Olympic swimming pool, two ports, a sailing school, a tennis club, multiple leisure activities, 22 shops, the Deauville seafront has the appearance of a vast, well-oiled, qualified company, whose nerve centre is the seafront service (see below). To show itself at its best, in the summer season, the beach is cleaned every morning. In fact, early in the morning is also the best time to admire the racehorses training at the water’s edge. On the “dog tourism” side: what could be better for your dog than to let off steam on kilometres of beach? My Rex love it !!! In Deauville, you can see a real dog parade all year round. But be careful, from May 1st to September 30th, dogs are only allowed on the beach before 10h and after 19h.

The Deauville seafront is punctuated by a succession of cabin doors separated by small openwork concrete rails. The Planches form a multitude of lines that take the eye into the distance. Originally 444 m long, the promenade now stretches over 656 meters. The long slats are no longer the original ones, but still made of azobé, a very resistant grey wood of tropical origin (Ivory Coast). And in the summer, the beach is covered with the famous colourful parasols with their Deauville knot, The Promenade des Planches runs along the beaches of Deauville, with a surface area of 656 meters long and 7 meters wide, made up of 64 slats laid side by side. An extension of around 60 meters was carried out to the east during the winter of 2022, on the Port Deauville side. On the opposite side, the promenade is extended by a section in slabs, which goes to Tourgéville and continues to Bénerville-sur-Mer.

The L’Etablissement des bains de mer de Deauville or the Deauville Sea Bathing Establishment at Place Claude Lelouch ,rents the deckchairs, sun loungers and mattresses by the day, week, fortnight, month or season (July-August). It is also possible to combine them with the rental of a parasol. The 450 bathing cabins, spread across 9 courtyards with Art Deco architecture, can be rented by the day, week, month or season. Two options are available to you: boulevard side and small indoor pools, baths side, for the Roaring Twenties atmosphere and its delicate world populated with atriums, a fountain and galleries Reservations open each year from January.

A bit of history tell us that in 1921, the decision was made to replace the previous beach huts and the wooden promenade with a modern and elegant sea bathing establishment. In 1923, an Art Deco style complex built, where 250 comfortable cabins were arranged around atriums, colonnades and pools enhanced with mosaics. A sober concrete architecture with simple lines. The origin of the “Planches”, installed along the cabins overlooking the sea, a sort of transition between the concrete and the sand. The Promenade des Planches is one of the emblematic places of Deauville, all of Paris and many international stars have walked this beach and its promenade, including Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor, Yul Brynner, Buster Keaton, Josephine Baker, Mistinguett, Sacha Guitry, André Citroën, Coco Chanel, Françoise Sagan, Kirk Douglas, Nicole Kidman, Sylvester Stallone, Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks, Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, John Travolta, Pierce Brosnan, Robert De Niro, etc. On May 25, 1987, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom walked there in a Rolls-Royce, without setting foot on the ground, by special dispensation. In 1966, Les Planches became an iconic place worldwide, with the international success of the film A Man and a Woman,( Un homme et une femme) by Claude Lelouch, a love story on this beach of the actors Jean-Louis Trintignant and Anouk Aimée, with the Ford Mustang 184 !! of the Monte-Carlo rally, against the backdrop of the chabadabada and the Normandy Hotel. In 1975, Deauville created the American Film Festival. From the 1990s, the names of the greatest actors and directors who participated in the festival were painted on the “lices” of the 450 bathing cabins that line the wooden promenade, in the presence of the award-winning American stars.
