The town of Lyons-la-Forêt is located in the department of Eure, no 27 in the Normandie region, and in my belle France. It is among “the most beautiful villages in France”. Located practically in the center of the Lyons national forest which gives its name to the village and this region of the Norman Vexin, the country of Lyons. In my road warrior mode passed by here more than once but just got a glimpse of the covered market or halle, there is plenty to see more, reason to be back, eventually, Let me tell you a bit on this is Lyon la Fôret !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.
The beautiful Halles or market of the 17C, restored in 1776 by the last lord of Lyons, the Duke of Penthièvre. A true emblem of Lyons, it is impossible to miss the halles, with their pillars and their wooden frame, especially as they sit in the middle of the Place Isaac Benserade square, bordered by old houses in pink bricks and half -timbered. Built in the 18C, they had a remarkable work of a frame, as this place has retained its old cachet. And if the place seems familiar to you, it is perhaps a memory of cinema that comes back to you: Jean Renoir, in 1932, and Claude Chabrol, in 1990, both shot scenes of their adaptations of Madame Bovary, so much this place has retained its old cachet. Today, it welcome the markets on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

A brief pro description from the local dept government page, The tile of the halle, of rectangular plan, is covered by a carpented construction, on three ears of nine posts, determining eight regular spans. The two first spans, from the west, were split by the addition of two rows of intermediate posts. The posts are based on stone bases cut in pyramid truncated. The height is divided into two parts by a transverse partition with wooden sides. Access to the height is by a mobile miller scale. The roof of tile, rump and rolled drain, is pierced with overflowing cranks. The halle is part of a very high quality arch.
Some other things to see here with more time are the 18C Cordeliers convent. Created in 1624, the convent is used until the French revolution. In 1793, it then welcomed a printed canvas factory and then a glassware. During a fire in 1852, the church was destroyed. Today there remains a conventual building and the cloister. It is a private property. The Church Saint-Denis 15C with elements of the 12C and 16C located at the level of the Gallo-Roman city, it most likely succeeded a place of pagan worship, The Hôtel de La Maréchaussée , 12C and 18C. Private property based on the old door of the 12C castle and retaining the vestiges of the 12C. The Old Logis, the oldest residential house in Lyons dated 1492, revised in the 17-18C, located 3, rue de l’Hotel de Ville in front of the Pharmacy The Hôtel de Ville, rebuilt in 1782 , on older foundations once housing the ducts of the city. On the first floor, old hearing room of the bailiwick, see the vestiges of the Château de Lyons, fortress of the kings of England and of France from Philippe Auguste to Philippe le Bel. The Benedictine convent of Saint-Charles backed by the vestiges of the castle enclosure. Today it houses a municipal school.
A bit of history I like tell us that in the middle of the 11C, construction of the fortress of Lyons by Henri Ier. The castle had four large towers, four gates, each of them kept by a different lord when at the end of the third crusade, Richard Coeur de Lion is retained prisoner by the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Henri VI , the opportunity appears too beautiful for the French sovereign, who seized the fortress in 1193, The town has from 1202 to 1298, numerous stays of the kings of France. Three stays attested for Philippe Auguste, four for Louis IX and ten for Philippe le Bel. Passionate about hunting, the Capetian kings then consider the forest of Lyons as one of the most beautiful in the kingdom. In 1762, the Duchy of Gisors passes to Louis Charles de Bourbon (maine), Duke of Aumale in exchange for the principality of the Dombes. In 1775, at his death, the duchy of Gisors passed to his cousin Louis Jean Marie de Bourbon, Duke of Penthièvre. In 1793, Louise Marie Adélaïde de Bourbon, Madame Equality, inherits it from her father. In 1821, entry into the heritage of Duke Louis-Philippe III of Orleans, future Louis-Philippe Ier, king of the French.
A bit of anecdote, Jean Renoir shot several scenes from the film Madame Bovary there, in September 1933, with Valentine Tessier in the role of Emma Bovary. Claude Chabrol shot many scenes from the film Madame Bovary in the fall of 1990, according to the eponymous novel by Gustave Flaubert.
