I like to have memories and nowdays even more. I remember Fontainebleau castle as it was in the Seine et Marne dept 77 that my dear late wife Martine, took me first to show me her department/region back in 1990. We have come here ever since, and it is one of my favorite castles been friend of the association that helps protect its heritage. Their office is on your left once entering the main entrance to the castle fyi. I have written many posts on it before, so peruse my blog and see beauty before your eyes. These are new pictures to my blog thanks to my vast cd rom vault, Of course, this is also in the Île de France region of my belle France, Therefore, here is my take on the Chapelle de la Trinité of the Château de Fontainebleau, part II !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

For info, above ceiling is showing the Christ of the judgment surrounded by the first seven intelligences and justice. This was the ancient church convent of Trinitarian clerics settled here by Saint Louis in 1259, this one was attached to the castle under king François Ier. Rebuilt from this reign and under Henry II, the Chapel received the present vault under Henri IV and was finished by Louis XIII and then enriched by Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI. This chapel is a masterpiece of classicism! The Chapelle de la Trinité or Trinity Chapel is rectangular in shape. It is placed in the east wing of the Cour d’honneur ,to the left of the Great horseshoe staircase. The roof is double-sloped. The Interior is on two levels, the Chapel hosts the Royal Tribune in the background above the entrance. It is illuminated by high rectangular windows placed on the second level, alternating with oval cartridges decorated with paints. The first level is composed of side chapels closed by ornate wooden grates alternating with the batteries decorated with double Corinthian pilasters. On the north side, the monumental altar is composed of a triumphant arch altarpiece decorated with bronze incense bearer statues of angels and adorned in its center a painting depicting the deposition of the Cross. Behind this altarpiece was located the choir of religious Trinitarian. The arched vaulted ceiling is richly decorated with paintings framed in cartridges, frames and floral decorations in stucco. The balconies were destined for the king’s music.

The high altar, produced in 1633,as well as the multicolored marble paving of the ground, is surrounded by statues of sovereigns (Saint Louis on the right of the altar with the lines of Louis XIII , and Charlemagne on the left with the features of Henri IV). The altar and the original tabernacle are at the parish Saint Louis Church of Fontainebleau (see post) where they were transferred on the French revolution. The altar’s painting was painted by Jean Dubois le Vieux in 1642 and represents the Holy Trinity at the time of the deposition of the cross. The Tribune, carried by columns of marble, is the work of Scibec de Carpi, just like the closure of the choir dating from 1554. The woodwork and the chapel grids are done in 1629. The latest decorative paintings executed in the chapel are the oval paintings made under Louis XVI. The main event that took place in this Chapelle de la Trinité were the marriage of Louis XV and Marie Leszczyska in 1725 (the superior of the Trinitarians, Louis Blouin, presented the holy water to the king and the queen). The chapel was also the theater of the marriage of Marie-Louise d’Orléans with Charles II of Spain (represented by the Prince of Conti) and the baptism of Prince Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte (future Napoleon III) in 1810 with 24 other children and the marriage of Ferdinand-Philippe d’Orléans with Hélène de Mecklembourg-Schwerin on May 30, 1837.
