Curiosities of Bressuire !!!

Once again, coming back from my road warrior trails in my belle FranceThis one after many passing finally went in City center of Bressuire, with great architecture and history to boot. You will see plenty in next posts stay tune, The City of Bressuire is located in the Deux-Sèvres department no. 79 in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of my belle France. Therefore, here is my take on curiosities of Bressuire !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Bressuire is located 32 km from Parthenay, 30 km from Thouars, 46 km from Cholet. The town is close to Nantes, Poitiers, Angers, on the N149 , and the N249 roads. It is 244 km from my current home, However, on my visit this time came from Thouars on the D938 ter entering on Bd de Thouars to rondpoint left on Rue de la Cave to Place Dupin and parking !

The Marché des Saveurs 19 Pl. Dupin , Meet your local merchants and producers at the market every Tuesday and Saturday from 7h30 to 13h. A non-food outdoor market is also held every Tuesday morning at Place Dupin.

The Hôtel de Ville , Musée et office du tourisme Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, Housed in the town’s former grain granaries, the museum explores the history of the bocage through recent archaeological discoveries and works of art (sculptures, paintings, goldwork, etc.), mostly produced in the Bressuire region. A large collection of ceramics, representative of the local Saint-Porchaire production, is on display. It ranges from medieval basins and pots to Parthenay earthenware and 19C Minton creations, inspired by the famous 16C works. Bressuire is also the birthplace of Max Ingrand , one of the greatest French glassmakers and stained-glass artists of the 20C.

The former Chapelle Saint-Cyprien is located at Rue du Péré, This church, founded in the 10C by the Viscount of Thouars, who donated it to the Abbey of Saint-Cyprien in Poitiers, was rebuilt in the 13C. Of the 13C church, only the circular apse in the early Romanesque style and its modillioned cornice remain. The façade, having been remodeled, retains a simple Romanesque doorway. Purchased in 1946 by the “Friends of Old Bressuire” association, it was sold to the town in 1949 to be converted into a museum. Recently restored, it is currently used as a cultural space for exhibitions and events , concerts, etc.

Other things to see with the consequences of wars as the architecture of the city center suffered greatly from the Vendée wars and only a few buildings remain from before the 17C; today’s city center dates mainly from the 18C and 19C. The Church Saint-Sauveur-de-Givre-en-Mai, built in the 12C, The Puy-Blain lodge, in Terves, built in the 15-16C, The old Noirlieu castle, partly demolished, built between 1565-1575 and 1604, with 17C outbuildings, The Dubrie estate, in Beaulieu-sous-Bressuire, a medieval castle remodeled from the 16C to the 18C, An art and history museum, housed in the town’s former granaries, presents the long tradition of pottery making in Saint-Porchaire and the works of the great Bressuirais glassmaker and stained-glass artist Max Ingrand.
