This is Bressuire !!!

Once again, coming back from my road warrior trails in my belle FranceThis one after many passing finally went in City center of Bressuire, with great architecture and history to boot. You will see plenty in next posts stay tune, The City of Bressuire is located in the Deux-Sèvres department no. 79 in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of my belle France. Therefore, here is my take on this is Bressuire !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Bressuire is located 32 km from Parthenay, 30 km from Thouars, 46 km from Cholet. The town is close to Nantes, Poitiers, Angers, on the N149 , and the N249 roads. It is 244 km from my current home, However, on my visit this time came from Thouars on the D938 ter entering on Bd de Thouars to rondpoint left on Rue de la Cave to Place Dupin and parking !

The Gare de Bressuire or train station was opened in 1868 and served by TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine and TER Pays de la Loire trains, including the “beach train” running between Saumur and Les Sables-d’Olonne, The picturesque train houses the resto La Guinguette in Jéjé at 54 Bd du Maréchal Foch,

The Subway by the place call Lieu-dit Les Patrottières, on Rue Marcel Pagnol, opened last September 2024 in a 200 m² space near Bocapole. The opening has a service station and electric supplier as well as a Boulangerie Louise brand and the Basic Fit gym. We just saw coming in on the D938TER from Thouars (see posts) and of couse hungry, popular place since younger days and my boys love it so we stop for a non French foodie chow !!!

Once in the area we went for fuel/gas at E.Leclerc Station Service in the Quartier de l’Allée de Bellefeuille, and just across the E Leclerc hypermarket at 13 Rue des Joncs, right off the D164 road to get our basic foodies and water for the house later, see post, no pictures.

A bit of history tell us that the first evidence of the town’s existence dates back to the 11C, with the mention of the Saint-Cyprien Church near the Castrum Berzoriacum. The medieval town was part of the Viscounty of Thouars and, at least in the Middle Ages, included three parishes: Notre-Dame, Saint-Jean and Saint-Nicolas. The latter, located within the castle walls and now disappeared was part of the Abbey of Saint-Jouin-de-Marne. Its medieval castle (now in ruins) is located on a rocky spur overlooking the Saint-Cyprien parish and its priory, which the Viscount of Thouars abandoned around 1030 to the monks of the Saint-Cyprien Abbey in Poitiers. The double enclosure of the castle, as well as the urban enclosure were established in the 13C with numerous towers and five gates, surrounding the two parishes located outside the castle (Notre-Dame and Saint-Jean). The Hundred Years’ War put the castle and the town to the test. At the end of 1370, Du Guesclin invested the place then in the hands of the English. In the 15C, the Franciscans established the first convent in the town: the Cordeliers monastery, which was destroyed at the beginning of the 19C for the construction of the current City/town hall. From the Middle Ages to the 15C, Bressuire prospered and the town was known in particular for its drapery activity. Its lord, Jacques de Beaumont, Chamberlain to King Louis XI, reinforced the town’s prestige. The Wars of Religion in the 16C marked the decline of Bressuire, During the Vendée War or war of the west with Brittany, the town was republican within the royalist bocage. It resisted the first peasant attacks of August 1792 and was not taken until 1793 by the Catholic and Royal Army. In the spring of 1794, the Republican General Grignon set fire to the town, leaving only a few houses intact. The revolutionary period left the town drained. It would take a long time for it to recover. In the period 1900-1950, the two world conflicts were cruelly felt as in the rest of the country.
