The Théâtre Jean-Vilar of Suresnes !!!

Moving about in my road warrior mode I have come here and worked in the City several years back.  Suresnes was a nice town and many nice memories ,see my other posts on it, This is in the Hauts de Seine dept 92 of the Île de France region ,and my belle France,. I have found me an odd picture in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, Therefore, here is my take on the Théâtre Jean-Vilar of Suresnes !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Théâtre Jean-Vilar of Suresnes is a performance hall located 16, Place Stalingrad, Inaugurated on March 27, 1938 under the name of “Albert-Thomas leisure center”, the building is intended for the inhabitants of the Jardin Cité de Suresnes, in order to offer them educational, popular and cultural activities: cinema, festivals, theater, etc, In 1951, the director Jean Vilar temporarily installed his national popular theater in the center, leaving the Palais de Chaillot (Paris), which welcomed the premises of the young United Nations. Two decades later, the theater is renamed in tribute to the artist , The theater welcomed a cinema, called “Le Suresnes”, I have to admit passed by it several times as used to have office in the City by the Seine but never been inside ; this is for the memories of Suresnes for me and hoping you can enjoy it more, Maybe because it was too far from my office at rue du port aux vins,,,,The picture must have been a drive by going home.

On February 3, 2020, after nine months of renovation, upgrading and redevelopment of the scene of the great room, behind the scenes, the fireplace of the artists and all the technical and artistic spaces of the back-scène, The Théâtre Jean Vilar of Suresnes reopens its doors. When it was created in 1938, the scene was small, 10 meters wide by 7 meters deep , The work undertaken in 2019, the tray becomes homogeneous between the front and the back-scène with an opening to the 13 meters, a depth of 14 meters and 22 meters of wall with wall. The prosecution is completely redone and offers easy access to the underside of the stage. 8 “streets” allowing the artists’ stage entrances and exits are arranged. The surface of this new scene, made up of a single space, is almost multiplied by three.

A bit of history tell us that in France, garden cities were created from 1905. when Henri Sellier, elected mayor of Suresnes in 1919, made his city the privileged land of a new urban and social project and launched the construction of the garden city of Suresnes In 1921. Named at the time, Albert-Thomas leisure center, the theater was a symbolic place of socialization and education. In 1951, Jean Vilar, just appointed director of the National Popular Theater, could not settle at the Palais de Chaillot, which then welcomed the UN General Assembly. He chose the Théâtre de Suresnes to host his troop and thus ensure the first representations of the Cid with Gérard Philipe, and created, on November 18, 1951, mother courage de Brecht. These artistic weekends were experiencing a real craze and attracts locals, Parisians and beyond. In addition to Gérard Philipe and Maria Casarès, come to participate in Maurice Chevalier, Yves Montand, Arago, Elsa Triolet, Armand Salacrou, René Clair, Jean Cocteau, and Patachou etc, The Théâtre de la Cité-Jardins de Suresnes-who will take the name of Jean Vilar 1971, testifies to both the social and political commitment of the creator of the Avignon Festival, for whom art and culture are at the heart of the city.

There you go folks, a lovely setting indeed , and gorgeous views from the Seine river quays to the Bois de Boulogne across. The town is next door to Paris and off the beaten path but worth the detour,me think. A beautiful setting for the history and architecture amateur in me. Then, move to Perth Amboy ,New Jersey USA (living there 13 yrs) ; where I completed high school, became a US Citizen, learned to drive a car, and learned English. Afterward, went to the university in Florida, ERAU, and upon graduation decided to moved there to Ormond by the Sea, near Daytona Beach, finally moving North Miami, then Hialeah, then another moved to Silver Lakes division in Miramar, Broward county, Florida; in Florida I lived a total of 18 years. Finally , moved to France in 2003 ,Versailles call me for its royalty, and working in Paris was great. It was time to seek frontiers again and moved to Brech near Auray, Morbihan in Brittany , and later move to not too far Pluvigner. Total so far in France has been 20 years, and counting.
