The Pont-Passelle du Mont-Saint-Michel included overall the Jetée du Mont-Saint-Michel, it replaces the road dike to reach Mont-Saint-Michel, at the Porte de Fanils or gate, overlooking the land by the water A bit of technical info for the amateur like me. It has a length of 760 meters. a 7.30 meters ford provides access to the village. Its construction on stilts allows the sea, passing freely below, to take sand and oar silt , The bridge bridge rests on 134 tubular steel posts, only 25 cm in outside diameter, but of considerable thickness (40 to 60 mm depending on the case) . They are anchored in pairs every 12 meters on imposing concrete stakes going to seek the good shale soil by 17 to 35 meters deep . The apron is divided into 64 sections all different of approximately 12×6 m weighing each forty tonnes. Each section is itself made up of four prefabricated sub-assemblies in Alsace. These four sub-assemblies are assembled on a “assembly bench” close to the Mount, then each section thus constituted is scraped at the location assigned to it. The sections are welded both with each other and on the posts, in groups of ten, forming five sets of 120 meters in common part, and by six for two 72 -meter sets at the ends . These sets are separated by dilation joints, allowing deformation at all under the combined effects of thermal variations, the tide and the current out of the Couesnon river. It offers a central roadway 6.50 meters wide for motor and horse shuttles, also dimensioned to allow the passage of the trucks necessary for the operation of the Mont Saint Michel. It is flanked on each side, overhang, of a pedestrian driveway of 4.50 meters to the west and 1.50 meters to the east The bridge overlooks the highest tides of 1.50 meters. These are average dimensions, since they are variable throughout the work. The pier is inaugurated in the fall of 2015,
The mount of St Michael or Mont Saint Michel has many towers around it starting from the entrance Tour du roi or king’s tower. To the right is Tour de la Liberté or liberty tower, then Tour Basse or lower tower, Bastion de la tour Boucle or tower bastion of the Loop, tour Demi Lune or half moon tower, tour du nord or north tower, tour Gabriel or Gabriel’s tower. On the left side back you see the Chapelle of St Aubert just after the tour Gabriel.(see pic) There is a very nice swampy lawn in between best seen from the tour du nord, Passed the threshold of the Porte du Roi, the visitor finds himself under an arched passage which served as a guardhouse. The rooms located above this passage now house the city/town hall of Mont Saint-Michel.
