Hope you enjoy the post as I. St Benoit la foret ch front feb22 The town of Saint-Benoît-la-Forêt is in dept no, 37 of Indre-et-Loire in the Centre-Val de Loire region of my belle France. Saint-Benoît, located 40 km from Tours, 42 km from Saumur, 93 km from Angers, 173 km from Nantes, and 318 km from my current home, We got there on the N165 to Nantes, then A11 dir Angers, then A85 by Bourgueil take the sortie/exit 5 on the D749 to Avoine ,connect with the D118 to town. Here you have the Church Saint-Benoît, rebuilt in 1877, and whose sacristy is in the choir of the previous church, dating from the 13C and 15C, It is next to the mairie or mayor’s office building and was closed. Nevertheless, brochures tells us that it has a stained glass window appearing a charity of Saint Martin. Saint Martin is represented standing, imbued, dressed as a soldier, helmeted, with golden armor. He is cutting his red cape with his sword. The beggar is kneeling in front of Saint Martin, and reaches out to the coat. He is dressed in a brown tunic with a bottom and a blue bag. In the background, a horse is also distinguished. Another statue shows a statue of Saint Martin in bishop. The statue is high, it is very colorful. We can see Saint Martin represented in bishop, he holds the bishop’s butt in his left hand. His other hand is broken at the forefront. His clothes are blue and pink. On the base, you can read “St Martin”. The church is undergoing fund raising for renovation by the City with no date in sight for its finish. When King Louis XI visited this town in March 1479, it was still called Saint-Benoît-du-Lac-Mort. Indeed, the town was located 150 meters north of the Lac-Mort stream. During the French revolution, the town became Benoît-le-Bois and then again Saint-Benoît. Finally, according to a prefectural decree, the appellation became Saint-Benoît-la-Forêt  in 1936. A nice story from the city page of Saint Benoît la Fôret, me think worth telling here, The American Camp In the early 1950s, a convoy of the American army arrived from Germany, set up its tents and built a camp in a wooded area along the main road from Chinon to Tours… At the same time, the construction of a 1000-bed military hospital was undertaken a few kms before Chinon. Inaugurated in 1951, the US Army Hospital has now become the Centre Hospitalier du Chinonais (Hospital). The establishment of the depot and the American hospital in the town of St Benoit, for more than 15 years (1951/1967), had created many links between the GIs and the locals, several of them working as civilian staff at the Depot Activity in Chinon. Dave Davidson an American, accompanied by Alain, one of his sons, he came to spend a few days in St Benoit to visit his French family Dave is a former soldier assigned to the US camp of St Benoit (Chinon Engineer Depot) for 3 years, from 1958 to 1960. It was at this time that he met Jeannine, whom he married. Aged 80, Dave is now a widower, Jeannine died in 2007. He lives between Austin and Waco, with his two sons Bino and Alain. Bino ,the eldest, was born at the military hospital of Chinon in 1960. Alain was born in Orléans in 1963.
