Hope you enjoy the post as I. The village of Montespan is located in the Haute-Garonne dept 31 in the Occitanie region of my belle France. On the historical and cultural level, the village is in the country of Comminges, corresponding to the former county of Comminges, district of the province of Gascogne located on the current departments of Gers, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and Ariège. The village is 86 km from Toulouse, 13 km from Saint-Gaudens, 59 km from Bagnères-de-Luchon, 120 km from Pau, 218 km from Jaca (Spain), 753 km from Versailles, and 802 km from my current house, We went dir Bodeaux, takes the A65, A64, D817, and D88, Beautiful countryside, To get off the road warrior trails to come here is to see the Château de Montespan now ruins of a fortified castle dating from the 13C. This feudal castle was gradually enlarged in the 14-15C. Its square dungeon 21 meters high, its round tower and some remains of the crenellated ramparts are still preserved. You will benefit from a sublime view of the Garonne plain and the Pyrenees, We enter the site by a large circular surrounding wall which probably protected the agglomerated village around the castle. We access the castle by a fortified farmyard, then, at the top of the relief, at the high court with several houses in it where the Lord’s family resided and his entourage. In the center, the very well preserved dungeon is still standing, which is the original building, going back to the 12C, around which the castle was gradually built until the 15C. Montespan château 12-15C ruins c2010 Other things to see here are the Cave of Montespan also called underground of Houantaou , This was a discovered in 1922 dating from the Magdalenian era indicates that the site has been occupied from the prehistoric highlights it is now closed to the public (check when open). A bit of interesting history I like tell us that Montespan is best known from the moment the Spanish family settles in this territory. Around 1235, the daughter of Arnaud of Spain, lord of Montespan, married Roger de Comminges, viscount of Couserans. In 1663, Louis Henri de Pardailhan-Gondrin, Marquis de Montespan, married Françoise-Athenaïs de Rochechouart de Mortemart, known as Madame de Montespan, She became the Marquise de Montespan, and made the name and the village famous by becoming the favorite of king Louis XIV.
