Therefore, here is my take on curiosities of Meung sur Loire !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.

The town of Meung-sur-Loire is located in the Loiret department no. 45 in the Centre-Val de Loire region of my belle France, It is 22 km from Orléans, 8 km from Beaugency, 142 km from Versailles, 32 km from Chambord, and 451 km from my current home, The town is crossed by three main axes: the A10 autoroute and three departmental roads (the RD 2152, the RD 2 and the RD 3). The A10 autoroute, known as L’Aquitaine, connects Paris to Bordeaux at its ring road via Orléans, Tours, Poitiers and Niort. The exit/sortie no. 15, is located in the town, The RD 2152 is a major road ,this is the old RN 152 which linked Briare to Angers via the right bank of the Loire when it was created in 1824, and which succeeded the Imperial Route 172,

The Mauves are a group of three small rivers that flow in the Loiret department no 45. There are three main branches, the Mauve de la Détourbe, the Mauve de Montpipeau, and the Mauve de Fontaine. The Mauves are a direct tributary of the Loire on the right bank. The Mauve de Fontaine follows a south-easterly direction until the confluence with the Mauve de la Détourbe, having already received the waters of the Mauve de Montpipeau, at the place called Roudon, in the City of Meung-sur-Loire, at an altitude of 97 meters, after a course of 5 km; the Mauve de la Détourbe has then traveled about 11 km. The Mauves then head south, an orientation they maintain generally until the end of their course, 17.6 km in length in total, they flow into the Loire on the right bank south of Meung-sur-Loire, in the town of Baule, at a place called Les Pâturages, at an altitude of 87 meters. The Mauves cross the center of the town of Meung-sur-Loire in three main branches, giving all its charm to the town, and earning it the nickname “Little Venice of the Loire Valley”. It was the monk Saint Liphard, who, having retired to Meung-sur-Loire with his disciples, played an essential role in the drainage of the marshes and the channeling of the springs and watercourses.

The pont de Meung-sur-Loire is a suspension bridge crossing the Loire. It supports the D18 departmental road which connects Meung-sur-Loire on the right bank to Dry on the left bank, then to Cléry-Saint-André and La Ferté-Saint-Aubin beyond. The existence of a bridge at Meung-sur-Loire is mentioned for the first time in documents narrating the epic of Joan of Arc. The bridge was in fact taken from the English by Joan of Arc on June 15, 1429. The English were definitively defeated three days later, at the Battle of Patay on June 18, 1429. Burned by the French army on September 21, 1870, the bridge was rebuilt during the years 1872-1874 maintenance work, including the repair of the piers in 1895 and the reinforcement of the rockfill in 1923-1924. Several updates over the years. Its length is 271 meters and it is made up of four spans. Resting on stone piers, its metal deck is 7 meters wide. Its suspension system rests on gantries at the piers and on a pair of obelisks at each abutment. The deck, with a metal frame and reinforced concrete, accommodates a 5.5 meters wide roadway as well as narrow sidewalks.

Office de Tourisme des Terres du Val de Loire – Bureau de Meung-sur-Loire or the Tourist Office of the Lands of the Loire Valley – Meung-sur-Loire Office located at 1 Rue Emmanuel Troulet facing the Mauves, What’s surprising when you enter this Tourist Office is the bicycles stored in the room. You can rent bikes and they will advise you on circuits and rides as part of the “Loire à Vélo” (Loire by Bike) initiative. This office is located in the former Poterne mill, and some Companions have created several works on this subject, which are exhibited in this space.

A bit of history tell us that the Gallo-Roman village was called Magdunum and was located in a very marshy region. In 408, the Alans burned down the Gallo-Roman fort. According to tradition, it was Saint Liphard around 520 who had the area drained, channeling the streams that became the Mauves. He built a chapel there, which later became a monastery. In 1103, King Louis VI seized the fortress. A year later, the relics of Saint Liphard were placed in the church. The fortified abbey dwelling adjoining the church was built during the 12C. In the 12C, the church was renovated in the Gothic style, Joan of Arc came to pray there in 1429. The Battle of Meung-sur-Loire took place on June 15, 1429, it was one of the battles that followed the siege of Orléans. Between January 29 and February 8, 1939, more than 2,800 Spanish refugees fleeing the collapse of the Spanish Republic before Franco’s troops, arrived in Loiret. Faced with the inadequacy of reception facilities in Orléans, rural reception centers were opened, including one in Meung-sur-Loire. Some of the refugees returned to Spain, encouraged by the French government which facilitated the conditions of return, those preferring to stay were grouped at the Aydes glassworks camp, in Fleury-les-Aubrais.
