This is Vaucouleurs !!!

Several years back while visiting my belle France, took a ride into this area. Not aware had some older paper picture in my vault and glad to found them! Not back since but left a nice impression ,and hope to be back, eventually. Not the best quality pictures but is all I have for the memories of always, I like to tell you a bit about this town taking advantage of these much older pictures. Therefore, here is my take on this is Vaucouleurs !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The city of Vaucouleurs is located in the dept no 55 of the Meuse in the Grand Est region of my belle France. It is 50 km from Nancy and Joinville, 74 km from Verdun, 94 km from Metz, 171 km from Reims, 301 km from Versailles, and 742 km from my current house, The D 964 roads takes you to Void-Vacon, Neuville-les-Vaucouleurs and Verdun where it connects with the A4 (My road), and the D 960 to Montigny-lès-Vaucouleurs, Rigny-Saint-Martin, and connects at Toul with the N4 and after the A31 to Nancy,

The Chapelle Castrale or castral chapel was built between 1923 and 1929, it was blessed in 1930 by Cardinal Lépier, native of Vaucouleurs. It occupies the location of the primitive chapel built in 1234. In the territory of the château de Vaucouleurs ; the castle of Robert de Baudricourt (companion of Joan) where the fate of Jeanne d’ Arc was decided, only the crypt of the Castral Chapel and the Porte de France remains. The castral chapel houses a 13C virgin called Notre-Dame-des-Vaûtes. Regarding the Porte de France, it was both a gate of the castle and the city gate. Originally built in the 13C, it was by which Jeanne d’Arc and her escort on February 23, 1429, left without return to her native Lorraine, The current vestiges date from a restoration made in 1733 on the remains of the primitive wall. The Musée Jeanne d’Arc de Vaucouleurs at 17 rue Jeanne d’Arc is devoted to the representations of this character with a tragic fate who since the Middle Ages has inspired writers, artists and historians. The four sections of the museum reveal, through a rich set of drawings, prints, stained glass boxes, bronze sculptures and posters, the different symbolisms linked to the image of Joan of Arc, both virgin, warrior and martyrdom.

Other things to see here, me think are : the parish Church of Saint-Laurent built between 1782 and 1785. Its ceiling was decorated with frescoes. It also houses a beautiful pulpit dating from 1717. The city hall: built between 1847 and 1848 on the site of an old convent, it welcomed a museum in its right wing recalling the main role held by the city in the Johannine epic. In front of the city hall is an equestrian statue of Jeanne d’Arc in bronze, with a weight of 2.5 tons, produced in 1951 for the city of Algiers. Indeed, the statue having been vandalized in 1962 at the end of the Algerian war, it was brought back to France before being restored and erected again on May 8, 1966 in the city having armed the Saint The ramparts and the so -called English tower: fortified together from the 12C ; the Tower of the King ,fortified of the city dating from the 13C.

A bit of history I like tell us that in 1171, the King of France Louis VII The Young meeting the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Germanic, Frédéric Barberousse in Vaucouleurs on November 19, 1212, the future king of France Louis VIII met there the future emperor of the Romans Frédéric II, prelude to the enthronement of the latter. They made an alliance pact there against the King of England, King John, On May 13, 1428, Robert de Baudricourt, governor of the king in Vaucouleurs, was visited by a 16 -year -old girl, who came from Domrémy. Vaucouleurs is then a French garrison located on the borders of the Duke of Burgundy allied to the English, and the Duchy of Lorraine, dependent on the Holy Roman Empire. She says she is the envoy of God but Baudricourt does not listen to her. Without being discouraged , Jeanne returns to Vaucouleurs on several occasions the people believes in the mission of Joan of Arc and resumes faith in the destinies of the kingdom, Jeanne d’Arc persists in her project. The convinced governor, the difficulties were reached, and on February 23, 1429, escorted by her first 6 companions in arms, Jeanne d’Arc left Vaucouleurs by the Porte de France. Here too was born in 1743 ,Jeanne Bécu de Vaubernier, Countess du Barry, aka Madame du Barry.
