We have driven in the area and stop by finally, and a great surprise indeed, This is the nice City of Vendôme in the Loir et Cher dept 41 of the Centre Val de Loire region of my belle France, There is so much to see , and did see more for you and me, So close by it many times and finally in ,a great surprise, nice town indeed! Therefore, here is my take on curiosities of Vendôme, part II !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.
The City of Vendôme is located 36 km from Blois from where we were coming on the road D957,around City on the N10 to City center following signs for Rochembeau parking, The City is 89 km from Loches where we were first, and 359 km from our current home on the D357 short on the A28/A11 then on the A81 to N157 dir Rennes and past the rocade on the N24 going home on the D768. For info all the below are within meters of each other around the Parc Ronsard.
The Hôtel de Ville or City Hall, story goes that it was the Duke César de Vendôme who founded in 1623 a college which he entrusted to Oratorians (religious congregation established in France in the 17C). This building changes its name several times.Royal military school at the end of the 18C, it became the Ronsard high school in 1930. The former premises, unoccupied, were developed in 1982 to welcome the City Hall. Honoré de Balzac was a student for seven years, at the beginning of the 19C at the Ronsard school. Tradition has it that it will make its punishment, locked in a reduced of the old Bellay hotel, known today as the Hôtel du Saillant, and which houses the tourist office today.

The library was built from 1866 to 1868 to house the library, the museum and the archaeological society. Saved by the bombing of June 1940, the building then became the City/town hall. The museum’s collections joined the Trinity Abbey in 1953.

The Lavoir des Cordeliers or washhouse from the late 15C in the Parc Ronsard , It was of the monks of the Cordeliers convent (currently the Maison des Tilleuls) , It sits on the on the Saint-Jacques creek arm, remains one of the rare examples, if not the only one, of this type on two levels, intended exclusively for a community, in this case a religious congregation. It was important, in fact, to drain the laundry on site before transporting it. Accessible by the old dead-end called “Chevrette” at no, 41 of the current Rue du Change and by the alley that once faced it, this tiered washhouse seems to have belonged, until the French revolution, to the Cordeliers.
