Again, found me an older paper picture of wonderful department of Aisne, glad I did find it and will need to show it to the world, I like to do justice to the place and give you an introduction, Therefore, here is my take on the Château de Septmonts !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I The Château de Septmonts, a former country house of the Bishops of Soissons, is located in the village of Septmonts department of Aisne no, 02 in Hauts-de-France region, Its construction has spread from the 13C to the 16C, Septmonts was the residence of the Bishops of Soissons since the 12C. The part dating from the 13C was built under the orders of Jacques de Bazoches and the so-called Saint-Louis room, which housed the chapel, would date from this time. The castle was rebuilt in the 14C by Simon de Bucy, bishop from 1362 to 1404. The dungeon and the square tower would date from the same era. The Renaissance palace known as the “Logis des Bishops” was built by the Bishop Symphorien de Bullioud who died there in 1534. The bishops stopped residing in the end of the 17C. It was in ruins when the painter Jacques-Edmond Leman buy it in 1864. He restored it and then, from 1877, Antoinette Leininger, baroness of Ezpeleta, ended the work. Bombed in 1918, the Renaissance house was left without a roof, abandoned until the creation in 19712 of the “Association of Friends of Sevenmonts” which took charge of its safeguard and the development of the site. The castle was acquired by the town in 1978, and the square tower in 1999. The dungeon, 47 meters high, was built from 1373 by Bishop Simon de Bucy. It consists of seven floors of a complex architecture served by a spiral staircase surmounted by a 15 -meter high clock. Its first two levels are vaulted on crusaders of warheads. The tower in particular housed an oratory and a lodge for the concierge , The square tower, made up of three floors, is semi-round inside. This defense tower has a spiral staircase housed in one of the redundants that allow the arches to be used. It would date from the same era. It was bought in 1864 by an owner who restored part of the top floor which he surmounted with a square belvedere. The Saint-Louis Chapel was built in the 14C or 15C. The Renaissance Logis (or Palace of the Bishops), built at the beginning of the 16C and long left in ruins, presents a forefront and niche forecorps and an iron staircase added around 1600. The vaulted cellar, located in the park to the north of the castle, is outside the enclosure. The whole buildings overlooks a park with a arboretum. The gardens include an orchard, .Park and castle are open to the public, A drawing by Jean-Pierre-Léopold Baraquin, visible at the Musée de Soissons, represents the dungeon which was admired by the romantics and made famous by Victor Hugo.
