The town of Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne is in the Dordogne dept 24 of the region of Nouvelle Aquitaine, It is about 40 km from Bergerac, and 75 km from Périgueux, I again, found me and older paper picture, and others from my cd rom vault, that I need to have in my blog, This was our hangout area for many years and this is a great sight, especially for the culture and history of it, Therefore, here is my take on this is Saint Michel de Montaigne !!! It was Pierre Magne, a lawyer originally from Périgueux and then Minister of Finance under Napoleon III, who acquired the estate in 1860 ; destroyed largely by a fire in 1885, but rebuilt a year later by the daughter of the minister, Marie Magne.The castle itself renovated is a 19C, inspired by Viollet-Le-Duc with its mixture of neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance. Its wine, Le Montravel (AOC), is relatively unknown, but deserves to be found on the big tables!
