We were on our local road warrior mode a while back in my quant Médan of my belle France. As usual, I passed by Médan , briefly do not know why did not go in more, but here I am to give it my tour of honor, This is a nice area and historical indeed but still off the beaten path and worth the detour, me think, I just touch base, and will do this post on my black and white series, no pictures. For reference, the town of Médan is in dept 78 of the Yvelines in the Île de France region, Therefore, let me tell you a bit on this is Médan !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I
The town of Médan is 12 km from Poissy , 16 km from Saint-Germain-en-Laye,23 km from Versailles, and 26 km from Paris. Superbe ! The roads here were taken by yours truly many times, especially the RD 164 and RD 154. The first dessert the center of Médan connecting to nice Villennes-sur-Seine, and leading to the RD 154, in the entrance to Vernouillet ,another nice town. The second, bypass Médan, and gives access to the RD 113, at a place called La Maison Blanche in the town of Orgeval, and continues towards Les Mureaux ,also crossing the Seine river into Pont de Triel-sur-Seine bridge between Vernouillet and Triel-sur-Seine. Awesome area !
Other things to see here in nice quant Médan are the Church Saint-Germain-de-Paris, Saint-Clair: built in 1635 for Jean Bourdin, lord of Médan. The Château de Médan: building dating back to the 15C, enlarged in the 19C. The poet Pierre de Ronsard stayed there in the 16C, welcomed by the Lord of the time, Jean Brinon. Maurice Maeterlinck resides from 1924 to 1938. Also, visit by Cézanne. The castle is located at 50, rue Pierre Curie , Lavoir or washhouse of the 19C, rue Pasteur, in the City/town hall courtyard.
A bit of history I like tell us that in the 9C Médan, was made up of a feudal mansion, 24 hospices, a church, a mill, nearby cultures and vines was an area possessed by the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. It is said that Charles the Bald was baptized there. The current church dates from the 15C. In the 16C, the castle was frequented by Ronsard as well as the Bellay, Baïf and the other poets of the Pleiade who come to chase there poems and epigrams in tribute to their patron and host of the place, Jean II Brinon. Émile Zola bought a house there in 1878 which became the meeting place for naturalists: the evenings of Médan.
