The Church Saint Pierre is one of the main religious buildings of the downtown ancient city successively called Saint-Pierre de Darnetal, Saint-Pierre-sous-Caen, Saint-Pierre-du-Châtel, Saint-Pierre -In-Rive, this church is the largest religious building in Bourg-le-Roi. It was in this church that the main public ceremonies took place. For example when Henri IV abjure the Protestant religion, ending the wars of religion, it is in the church that the Te Deum sung in the presence of the civil and religious representatives of the whole city. The Church Saint Pierre was closed during the French revolution and served as a temple of reason later of the Supreme being from 1793 to 1795 before coming back to the Catholic rite. During the French revolution, the sculptures of the portal were destroyed; in 1793, the church was transformed into a temple of reason, then returned to worship after the signing of the Concordat in 1801. The origin of the church is not yet known, but it is mentioned, after 1083, in the cartulary of the Trinity, of a “atrium sancti petri”, the Saint-Pierre. It is rebuilt for the first time in the middle of the 12C with Choir and Tour, 14C: facade decorated with immense pink, Gothic bell tower, 15C nave and aisle 15C, Renaissance apse 1518, The works over several centuries but respect the unit of whole which still offers remarkable parts today. The tower was raised in 1308, the right wing in 1410, the left wing shortly after, the large new gate or Portail Neuf in 1384. The northern facade was decorated in the 14C with a huge rosette of extreme lightness . In the 14C, it was also built its famous Gothic bell tower, considered as “the king of normandy bell towers” and which will influence many other monuments. The aisles and the upper parts of the nave were built in the 15C in the flamboyant style . The work of the apse, built on stilts on the odon, the vaults of the choir and the wings were started in 1521 and undoubtedly finished half a century later. Contrasting harmoniously with the rest of the church, it is one of the most perfect examples of the first Caennaise Renaissance. The porch under the tower is restored in 1608 with ornaments in statues. . Its famous arrow, masterpiece of the 14C, was used to define the modalities of the Norman bell tower. The renaissance -style carved decor of his bedside is also worthy of interest. The stained glass windows of the church were all destroyed during WWII. Modern creations been laid around 1960 during the global catering program. All come from the workshop of the Parisian glass painter Max Ingrand, with the exception of only one, the apocalypse of Paul Louzier.
During the night of June 8 to 9, 1944, the arrow of the church, mowed by a 406 mm shell probably drawn from the Rodney, collapsed from its 72 meters in the nave. A start of fire also destroys the roof. Rebuilt in 1957, the bell tower is now 75 meters, on March 31, 1957, the entire Church Saint-Pierre was returned to worship , Later in 2019, a 18C meridian was rediscovered to the right of the portal . In November of the same year, after the restoration of the bell tower, the three bells of the church were reinstalled in their oak case: Anne (351 years old – 1.3 ton), Paul (211 years old – 1 , 8 tonnes) and Pierre (211 years old-2.2 tonnes), A mechanical transmission organ was installed by Jean-François Dupont in 1997. It replaced a Danion-Gonzales instrument in turn replacing a Cavaillé-Coll destroyed during WWII ,suspended on the left side of the nave, so it was in a swallow nest.
