Curiosities of Amiens, part II !!!

I take you now up north to the old Picardie, now Hauts de France region and a very nice city with a lot of history of the struggle to be free in world wars.  This is Amiens ,in the Somme dept 80 of my belle France. We have been here all over , but need to tell you more with older paper pictures found in my vault. I would to tell you about the curiosities of Amiens, part II  !!! Hope you enjoy this post as I. The Cathedral Notre Dame of Amiens has lost most of its original stained glass, but it remains famous for its 13C Gothic sculptures adorning its western facade and the portal of the Golden Virgin on the south facade of the transept, as well as the stalls, work of art in cabinetry. Its architectural unity is evident, except for the upper parts of the two towers. The elevation of the nave of the choir and the transept reflects the ingenuity and boldness of the builders. It is 145 meters long ,with an arrow top at 112 meters, the nave vaults are 42 meters high.  It is estimated at 200,000 cubic meters in the interior space, more than double that of Notre Dame de Paris! Begun at the crossroads of the transept in 1220, the structural work was completed less than fifty years later, in 1269, and the frame was laid between 1284 and 1305. Wonderfully beautiful, a must to see in France !  One of the largest classical Gothic churches of the 13C. Amiens Cathédrale Notre Dame facade Amiens cathédrale Notre Dame side from garden The horloge Dewailly clock and Marie-Sans-Chemise (or mary without shirt) has a nice story in Amiens, The story goes that in 1892 Louis Dewailly, mayor of Amiens from 1873 to 1874, donated to the city of 25,000 francs to install in Place Gambetta a clock intended to give the time to the most modest Amiens, not having a watch to tell time. The clock is inaugurated on August 4, 1896, at Place Gambetta, but the statue was not up until 1898. The Printemps or spring, is the statue of the base, was renamed Marie Sans Chemise. At the bombing of WWII, it was put back in a road deposit on Boulevard de Beauvillé. Only the statue of spring was saved in 1965. It is placed on a base, at the corner of the rue Dusevel and rue des sergeants, also called Place Marie Sans Chemise, where the current clock is today. And see Cathedral back  ! Amiens horloge Dewailly near cathédrale Notre Dame The maison du Pèlerin, place Notre-Dame, in front of the cathedral in Amiens. It is actually not a house in the Middle Ages, but the early 20C. Created in 1904, the house survive WWII . It is in Néogothic style, A row of houses of this style existed between these two buildings but the bombings of WWII destroyed them. Only the Maison du Pélerin or Pilgrim’s house remains, with wooden sides, and the house where Edmond Douillet lived.
