The Quinta Avenida or fifth Avenue does not really correspond to the streets of Havana, since this avenue is located in Miramar. Miramar belonged to the city of Marianao, near Havana, but a separate city. This is now together in Havana, At the end of the 1950s the fifth Avenue had the most luxurious houses in the Metropolis of Havana. In Miramar ,the fifth avenue ,the main and most beautiful street. The fifth Avenue is in Marianao the continuation of the Malecon of Havana. Before the Almendares river crossed by a bridge, on the side of Havana was the Malecon and on the other side, in Miramar that belongs to Marianao, the Fifth avenue . In the early 1950s the bridge was replaced by a tunnel. In difference to the Malecon, Fifth Avenue is not close to the sea. It is located a few blocks from the coast. Being in those blocks where they were, are still some, the clubs and hotels of the beaches closest to Havana.
As a sequence of the above ,I take the opportunity to tell you more about this town of Marianao, it had a slogan, la Ciudad que Progresa or the City of progress until 1959.
The City of Marianao housed not only beautiful forests and beaches, but also the most famous cabarets, casinos and private clubs in the city. In addition to luxury cultural and social life that had developed at the beginning of the 20C, Marianao is an original Arabak name used to describe a large extent of land located between the waters of the Almendares and Quibú rivers. This district was formerly called “Ciudad Jardin ” or garden City for its privileged nature. The most important population establishment dates back to 1720, the date on which the protector of the Indians Cristóbal Zayas Bazán asked the Cabildo (colonial board of directors) of Havana to establish an indigenous community at the site known today as Quemados de Marianao, a name that alludes to the fire that ravaged the original hamlet. The village developed over time around a hermitage dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier. Attached by fertile land and the facilities offered by the Camino Real de Vuelta Abajo (the royal road back down ,that took the riches of the tobacco plantations and passed by my native town as well ! ) , families of farmers have gradually started to arrive at the region. The aristocrats, too, found a paradise site in Marianao to build their summer houses, near the sea, or their country houses. After the end of the War of the Ten Years in 1878 (for independence from Spain) , Marianao acquired the status of City, and was the only agricultural and sugar place near the capital and also had to itss credit the sugar factory Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Our Lady of Carmen), later known under the names of Toledo and Martinez Prieto. Salvador Samá Martí, Marquis de Marianao, was a main figure in the development council, a company which contributed to the growth of the village and sponsor of works like the main Teatro Principal, scene on which renowned figures occurred such as Rita Montaner, singer and Cuban actress and Esperanza Iris, famous Mexican star. It had nautical clubs, a country club, which had the best 18 -hole golf course in America, a Yacht Club, a racetrack Parque Oriental ,considered to be the Mecca of horse racing in all of America, a cynodrome, Cinemas, as well as elegant parks and streets perfectly drawn and bordered by trees, like the beautiful Quinta Avenida (see above),
The military district of Columbia was the seat of the staff of the national armed forces. According to a slogan of the time, “who has the control of Marianao, holds Cuba”. The 1952 putsch given by General Fulgencio Batista, president of Cuba for seven years. It was in this barracks that the putsch took place and it was from its airport that Batista left Cuba when learned of the approach of Fidel Castro and his men advancing towards Havana. In 1976, following the decision to carry out a new politico-administrative division, Marianao was divided into three towns: Playa, Lisa (this is the municipal term of my native town now), and Marianao. The town, the surface of which was reduced to 22 km, thus lost the forest, the Almendares river and the beaches. Truth is that today the city is home to a good part of the most famous marginal districts in Havana. Marianao will never progress again ,just here for the memories of always.
There you go folks, another nostalgic tour of yours truly. Memories fading but they stubbornly remain in my mind forever, after this will always be my Havana, mi La Habana! That will never be the same again, memories forever !!! Again, hope you enjoy this post on the streets of Havana as I,
