The Aquarium of San Sebastian !!!

I bring you again to a wonderful city of my dear Spain, I by pass the City many times on my route between France and Spain, Incidentilly, the first time in this city was while on the beaches of the Médoc in Bordeaux and we decided back in 1992 to come down for a closer look always in my road warrior mode. It has been as the old saying said, the beginning of a beautiful friendship of San Sebastian, The choices are endless and very nice spots as we walked all over once in town, I like to bring out pictures hidden in older posts that I feel needed to be shown more, for the memories of always, Therefore, Let me tell you about the aquarium of San Sebastiàn !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.

By the harbor you come into a wonderful small Aquarium ; this was at the Palacio del Mar, at paseo del muelle, 34, basque architectural design built on September 19 1908 as the headquarters of the Guipuzcoa Oceanographic Society. The aquarium is an emblematic building, built in 1928, two plants dedicated to the maritime and marine heritage of Gipuzkoa, highlighting the skeleton of a frank whale, as well as a wide range of aquariums dedicated to the Cantabrian Sea, in which you can contemplate more than 200 species, with its famous 360º tunnel, to which you have to add a wide variety of tropical species. The Aquarium-Museum of the Sea has a significant historical maritime collection, as well as a modern extension with giant aquariums and a huge pool of 1,800,000 liters of water which is crossed by a transparent tunnel allowing to pass from one tank to another, exposing a large amount of species of fish and other marine animals, Again, my showing off pic……

It is divided in 3 sections, the Oceanarium: This is the giant swimming pool that was mentioned above. It is a 30 -meter long and 16 width swimming pool, which is crossed by a tunnel that gives us the impression of being in its depths. The Thematic aquariums: several aquariums bring together different species in fun of their fauna and their origin. You can appreciate the discovery of fish from around the world. And the Tactile aquariums: it is an aquarium that will enchant your children. These are open aquariums where you can reach multiple marine species such as sea urchins, starfish and many others.

The Albaola (whaling) Museum , not far from the Aquarium-, is a small museum reminds us of this traditional and dangerous activity of the Basques, now extinct, but which, before the era of coal and hydrocarbons, has supplied oil to cities and made the fortunes of ship owners, The Basque went to whaling as strictly speaking, only the Basques operated whaling between the 6C and the 17C. The other nations have learned this thanks to the Basques later. The port of Pasaia ,5 km east of Donostia-San Sebastian was the most important whaling port in Europe from the 16C to the 18C. There is a beautiful museum which tells the story of San Juan. The whaling ship San Juan was built in 1582 in Pasaia and left the harbour in the spring of 1585 from Pasaia to Canada / Newfoundland / Red Bay. In the fall of 1585, just before the return journey, the anchor rope broke in a storm and the San Juan sunk at the coast of Red Bay (Canada / Newfoundland). 400 years later it was possible to recover the ship in very good condition. Since 2013, the ship has been built exactly in the Museum Albaola. You can reach it by bus or train from San Sebastian, but we came by car passing on the AP8 highway; exit salida 5 to Pasai San Pedro.
