Pau is an interesting town. We had passed by it many times, even stay in quick night hôtels on the town, especially for the tour de France bike race; but never really wandered about it, and we decided that after so many choices we have here to pick one that we have not seen fully, That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship as the old saying and we have been in it several times, As we walked the beat we stumbled upon the Villa Lawrence in the parc Lawrence a wonderful oasis in the middle of the City, Therefore, this is my take on the Parc and Villa Lawrence of Pau !! . Hope you enjoy it as I.

The Parc Lawrence is located in a district at the many English villas of the 19C, not far from the Pau exhibition center or the Place de Verdun. It shelters hundred -year -old trees, such as cedars from Atlas and Lebanon, lawns, a playground and a merry -go -round for children. Pau is one of the most flowery cities in France and as such has had the “4 flowers” label for many years.
Villa Lawrance of Flemish and Germanic style, was built by the Schlumberger family, in 1855. In 1893, it became the property of the Lawrance family already installed luxuriously in town, at the current headquarters of The Banque de France. At the time it was a villa in the countryside, the city of Pau not yet extending that far. The Lawrance bought land around to make a park. This was bought by the city of Pau during WWII. The bust you see in the parc Lawrence are of General André Pommiès, born June 9, 1904 in Bordeaux and died September 16, 1972 in Arbus near Pau, is a French soldier hero of the Resistance. After the invasion of the southern zone in November 1942, he clandestinely set up a Corps franc pyrénéen (CFP) which will later be called Corps Franc Pommiès.

The beautiful Villa Lawrance housed the Robert Poplawski Institute of Legal and Economic Studies between 1946 and 1970, housed the Faculty of Law, Economics and Management before the creation of the University of Pau and the Pays de Adour ,then the administrative services of the presidency before a dedicated building was built on the campus in 1994. Since 2002, it has been the headquarters of the Cercle Anglais or English Circle of Pau and houses its collections.

It has been said “Memories are our strengths. Never let memorable dates fade away. When the night tries to return, you have to light the big dates, as you light torches ” Original of « Les souvenirs sont nos forces. Ne laissons jamais s’effacer les anniversaires mémorables. Quand la nuit essaie de revenir, il faut allumer les grandes dates, comme on allume des flambeaux » by Victor Hugo.
