The Domus Aurea of Rome !!!

And here I go again with eternal Rome !! I had several business trips over the years and once took the family on a long 2 weeks vacation, and they love it , In Rome , we were confronted with lots of history and architecture which we love. However, we did a lot of walking more than ever me think. One area near the coliseum (see post) we enjoy going up and walking around was the Domus Aurea, I found an older picture buried in another post and decided it needs a post of its own, Therefore, here my take on the Domus Aurea of Rome !! Hope you enjoy it as I.

After the Great fire of Rome in the year 64, Nero built a sumptuous palace. Having seized land at the bottom of a low valley at the bottom of which ran a channeled stream, between the Caelian, the Esquiline and the Palatine, he built the magnificent Domus Aurea. In front of pavilions, gardens, and porticoes, he created an artificial lake and placed Nero’s colossus palace not far from the entrance to the estate. The pre-existing aqueduct of the Aqua Claudia was extended for the water supply of this area. The lake was filled and the land reused for the construction of the new Flavian Amphitheater which was destined to replace the amphitheater of Statilius Taurus totally ravaged during the great fire of Rome.

It has more than 300 rooms in the Domus Aurea !! It is estimated that it occupied around 50 hectares between the hills of the Palatine and the Esquilin with a total area of 25 times that of the Colosseum ! It, also, had vines, corn fields and forests. Apparently, this villa was used exclusively for the holidays and none of its 300 rooms was used as a bedroom. However, the strangest fact is that no kitchen or latrine has been found throughout the complex. The construction of the Domus Aurea, also known as the Golden House, was considered to be the most extravagant work in the history of Rome. Its huge golden dome, thanks to which it was given its name, was one of the many eccentric elements of the decoration.

The Domus Aurea doors were reopened to the tourists in February 2007 by limiting the number of visitors and imposing the use of a helmet. On March 30, 2010 collapsed the entry of one of the galleries, lengthening the period of closure to the public of this archaeological site until 2015 (just when we came in!!) The Domus Aurea is accessible only with a guided tour.
