The Cour des Mathurins of the Château de Fontainebleau !!

Oh yes one of my favorite castles of France and my first ever visited back in 1990, when I came to be shown this castle by my girlfriend then wife of 28 years, my dear late wife Martine! It was a love affair ever since ,and proud member of the Friends of the castle. It has so much in architecture and history of France, its huge and of course of the world. Therefore, here is my take on the Cour des Mathurins of the Château de Fontainebleau !! Hope you enjoy the post as I

Let me tell you some areas not have touch base much yet and they are sublime. I found me older pictures of these and they should be in my blog, me think, The wonderful beautiful and architecturally stunning Château de Fontainebleau, where else! And its Cour des Mathurins ! In my belle France, better for me my sentimental Seine et Marne dept 77 of the Île de France region. Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Cour des Mathurins is a wonderful courtyard where many events are held including the hunting chase of Fontainebleau. It is marvelous to walk in it !! It is located to the north of the castle building, and has served as a service court since the 16C. Its name comes from the first inhabitants of the place, the Trinitarian religious, also called Mathurins. Also, the entrance for persons with mobility impairing to the castle. It is normally and most the administrative entrance to the castle as well as parking, A nice way to go in indeed folks. Note, this is the spot where the St Hubert hunters rallye is done and wonderful carriages , horses, and hunting dogs go out into the Forest of Fontainebleau !!

The Cour des Mathurins played the role of a service courtyard from the 16C. Its name comes from the first inhabitants of the place, the Trinitarian monks, also called Mathurins. Opposite the theater,(see post) the Mathurins courtyard evokes the history of the convent of the monks of the Order of the Trinity, nicknamed the Mathurins. This order, founded in the 12C, was intended to redeem Christians taken prisoner by pirates in the Mediterranean. In 1259, Saint Louis, who had himself been taken prisoner, installed these monks near him to serve the royal chapel and open a hospital. Their convent, hindering the successive extensions of the Castle, was moved several times. In the 17C, it overlooked this small square.

The convent probably occupied part of what will become the Court of Honor. A chapel, a hospital, a dwelling, a chaplain’s house, a garden, a large enclosure and a pond used as a fishpond (on the site of the current Carp Pond, see post) are dedicated to the use of the Trinitarians. When Francis I remodeled the castle, the first buildings would be demolished and a temporary convent would relocate the Trinitarians as close as possible to the Trinity Chapel, probably in the current Ministers’ wing. In the following centuries, a series of vicissitudes and work at the castle led to numerous relocations and displacements of the Trinitarian brothers. Although the convent buildings were completely destroyed during the 16C, the names of the Chapel of the Trinity (see post) and the Cour des Mathurins are still in force and refer to the presence of the Brothers within the walls of the Château de Fontainebleau.
