The town is located on the D 748 road, 16 km south of Angers, 29 km from Saumur, 46 km from Cholet, 85 km from Nantes and 266 km from Paris; and 252 km from my house. I will cut short on the text as mainly was told in the previous posts. Therefore, here is my new take on the wonderful Château de Brissac !!!

The Château de Brissac is the highest in France, indeed, 51 meters high with its seven floors, it totals 204 rooms. It remains open to visitors; so much there is to contemplate its dazzling decoration made up of gilded ceilings with leaf, tapestries and precious furniture. Its park offers beautiful views in the shade of hundred-year-old trees. The castle can only be visited on a guided tour.

This fortress-castle, built between the 11C and 17C, is a must to sit and contemplate. On the steps, at 180 degrees, Brissac takes on its full extent over 70 hectares. Five themed walks where rose bushes, vines, century-old trees and multiple water features mix reveal the imposing architecture of the castle,The park and gardens of the Château de Brissac offer pleasant walks in the shade of century-old trees along the flowery and shaded paths which wind near the ponds and along the Aubance river. These paths have the evocative names “Pierre de Ronsard, Promenade du Pont Rouge, du Mausoleum, de la vigne des cinq centuries.etc.

Inside, precious furniture, tapestries, gilded ceilings, up to the chapel, the King’s Room, where Monseigneur the Duke of Brissac usually sleeps, the Golden Salon, the Young Ladies’ Room, the Metamorphoses Apartment, the Bedroom of Monsieur the Marquis, opening in front of the chapel, that of the late Monsieur le Duc, the Great Gallery of Portraits of the House of Cossé, the Apartment of Belle Judith, the Chamber of Philosophers, the Apartment of the Princes of Denmark, Epicurus’ Chamber, etc, From the kitchen to the monumental fireplace dating from the 17C with paved and vaulted cellars, the visit travels through the centuries. Without forgetting one of its marvels: the delightful little “Belle Epoque” theater, created in 1890 by the Marquise de Brissac, Jeanne Say, and dedicated to opera.

A bit of history I like tell us that in August 1620, it was the scene of a significant event: the reconciliation of Louis XIII and his mother, Marie de Medici. The King’s bedroom, accessible via the large monumental gallery 32 meters long, preserves the memory of the passage of the monarch then aged 19, During WWII from 1939-1940, the Duke of Brissac opened his castle to the works of Versailles and other prestigious museums, thus allowing them to be sheltered during hostilities despite an aggressive incursion by the Nazis in August 1944. Brissac is a family castle which has belonged to the same family since May 26, 1502, the date of purchase of the lordship of Brissac by an Angevin gentleman, René de Cossé. 521 years later, his descendants, the Duke Charles-André and Duchess Larissa de Brissac with their four children Laszlo, Irina, Délia and Annabel., the owner.still live in this residence with their four children.
