If you have read my blog, you know Trier or Tréves in French is one of my favorite cities in Europe, small, historical, and beautiful just like I like them most. I have come to Trier in several occasions since 1990, mostly one day-two days trips into the City from Luxembourg City , I came with the family on vacations in Germany and stayed just outside on the wine areas below it and could come more often to see its beautiful buildings. The history here is huge ,and stunning architecture !, I lhave a big post on the St Peter’s Cathedral so will be brief on the text and big on the new pictures to my blog. This is a huge beautiful cathedral and right on a nice area for walks et al, It is a must to visit…

St. Peter’s Cathedralin Trier, Rhineland-Palatinate state, and the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Trier. Built between 1235 and 1270, it is the oldest Cathedral in Germany. Its multi-secular history is made visible by the assembly, on the facades of the building, of architectural styles of different eras. Its dimensions ,112 meters long by 41 meters wide, make it the most important religious building of Trier.

With a history of worship and construction going back 1700 years, the High Cathedral of St. Peter in Trier is not only the oldest church in Germany, but also the oldest building still serving its original purpose as a cathedral to the present day. The cathedral has been the burial place of the Trier bishops since the Middle Ages. Today’s Cathedral still contains a Roman central section with the original walls rising up to a height of 26 meters (86 ft). The huge fragment of a granite column next to the entrance to the Cathedral is another indication of the Roman origin of the building. After destructions in the 5C and 9C, the remaining nucleus was enlarged by Romanesque additions. Today, the cathedral, with its three crypts, its cloister, cathedral treasury, and Holy Robe Chapel, displays architecture and artwork from about 1700 years. After your visit, slide down the cathedral stone, which is an old tradition! It lies to the left of the main entrance.

The St Peter’s Cathedral is huge and beautiful , I just told you a bit more on Trier, there is lots to see here and it is a must to see while visiting the city or nearby areas! A wonderful, memorable family spot for us.
