Curiosities of Mettlach !!!

I bring back to neighbor Germany and the town of Mettlach which after looking at some brochures in a previous stop we decided to do our road warrior challenge to see it, It caught the attention of my dear late wife Martine as she saw an opportunity for shopping ! We took all the way on the road B51 from my base south of Trier;easy and beautiful landscape, Let me show some curiosities of Mettlach !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

Once in town ,and a bit of walk around, we notice a wonderful St. Luitwinus Church that we like very much.  And find we did ; the current church was built in 1902 in the Neo-Romanesque Rhine style, offers beautiful examples of local mosaic art. It presents pieces of a unique finesse to the north of the Alps. The previous church was built in 1847 which replaced the old church from the 8C. I like to add here a closer picture of the Altar and the wonderful organ, that were left from the initial post on the church (see post).

The funerary Chapel of Saint Luitwinus has a central layout, quite similar to other churches There is indeed an octagonal layout structure inside. Obviously this church was not intended to accommodate the body of a saint. Its function must have been quite different. It must have been the church of a prince or king. It was to serve as a place of worship, an ambassador’s lounge, and a debate room. This does not prevent it from being used as a burial place. It could even have housed the relics of a saint. The width of this vault corresponds to that of the gallery which runs around the chapel on the first floor. The transoms which support this vault overflows at an angle towards the intrados of the vault with elegant capitals. In the extension of the two columns and on the right, you can see a massive pillar with polygonal section. Looking to the right, you can see between the edge of the facades of the upper part and the buttress two arcades. There are no powerful buttresses ,and the building appears very elegant. It was not possible to see the other parts, the interior being closed by a grille. The original building had to be framed. It was decided in the Gothic era. And maybe even before. The Gothic vaulting was achieved by placing columns and pointed arches against the original walls to support the 8 roof support ribs. The result is stunning. You see sarcophagi dating from the Early Middle Ages, the middle sarcophagus has an oblong shape and a head compartment characteristic of sarcophagi from the 6-7C. A nice walk closer to the Villeroy & Bloch porcelain museum than to the the Church of Saint Luitwinus on a nice garden setting.
