Again, now firmly in family territory,we have arrived at Caudry, Many memories now visiting older brother of my dear late wife Martine,,, and many visits before moving west to Morbihan, It has been a while to gather strengths but glad finally here, This is the continuation of wonderful sights in the dept 59 Nord of the region of Hauts de France, and in my belle France , Therefore, let me tell you about the Basilica Sainte Maxellende of Caudry !!! And this time is under renovations! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Caudry shares with Calais the title of the world Capital of Lace of Calais design to go into high fashion garments. The town is ,also, named City of Occupations and Arts in 1995. It is located about 14 km from Cambrai, and 62 km from Lille , 9.5 km from Cateau-Cambrésis, 28 km from Valenciennes and 32 km from Saint-Quentin. It is south of the D643 road, ( old N43) that links Cambrai with Charleville-Mézières.
The Basilica of Sainte Maxellende, is named after a young lady of Caudry assassinated by her pretender Harduin d’Amerval in the 7C. T . It is enlightened to see it each time there but this time was in renovation. The parish church is the Basilica of Saint Maxellende, whose construction resulted from strong population growth in the second half of the 19C. The old church, located at the eastern end of the current Place des Mantilles, had become too small and was falling into ruin. The first stone was laid on August 14, 1887 and the consecration of the building took place on April 7, 1890. The church was elevated to the rank of minor basilica by a pontifical brief dated September 3, 1991

In the neo-Gothic style, it is built of brick on a white stone base. It measures 72 meters in length and 36 meters in width at the transept. The bell tower is 75 meters high. It has a carillon of three bells. In the gallery, above the entrance, is installed the large organ built in 1913 by Charles Mutin of the Cavaillé-Coll house.Inside, the large nave reaches 20 meters high under the keystone and the two side aisles reach 8 meters. The transept ends with two chapels, the one on the left dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, the one on the right to Sainte Maxellende with the shrine of the saint, a piece of Gothic goldwork from the second half of the 14C in gilded copper and embossed silver, reworked in the 18-19C The transept is lit by two rose windows, each comprising 4,600 pieces of glass placed around 1921, the result of a wish of the Caudresian population during the Great War or WWI.
