The Hospice Comtesse museum of Lille !!!

Again, for the story, It took me a while , worse when you have family about an hour from the city. But often said, living and visiting are two different things . When in the area stay with family and this time again, however, did it in reverse order, when to see Lille and its sights, (stay tune for posts), and then went to see family. Therefore, let me tell you about the Hospice Comtesse Museum of Lille !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

But the religious heritage in Lille is also the hospices. The best known, the Hospice Comtesse, Rue de la Monnaie was founded in 1236 by Joan of Constantinople, Countess of Flanders. Several times prey to flames, little remains of the original construction. The sick room, from the 15C, is the oldest part, the chapel having been rebuilt in the 17C and the convent buildings in the 18C. In the convent building, you can still visit the kitchen and its scullery, the dining room, the prioress’s apartments,

The Hospice Comtesse is a former hospice, most of whose buildings date from the 17C. Its construction was decided by Jeanne, Countess of Flanders, in 1237. Located rue de la Monnaie in Old Lille. Nothing remains of the original establishment reserved for the sick poor, pilgrims and passers-by. , a fire on the night of April 11, 1468 having completely destroyed it. The sick room was rebuilt between 1468 and 1472 , and again by the community of the Augustines between 1477 and 1482. Following a new fire, on March 17, 1649, which destroyed the chapel and some conventual buildings, the floor of the community building was raised or rebuilt to house the sisters’ dormitory by 1649-1652. In 1650, the building had facade of which was rented to craftsmen and traders, then, from 1652 to 1657, the work was completed by building a new chapel enhanced and separated from the sick room by a rood screen following the recommendations of the Council of Trent. The wooden ceiling of the sick room is then decorated with tapestries dating from 1704. The main courtyard is closed to the west by a final building completed in 1724. The building remained the main Lille hospital until the end of the 18C.

During the French revolution, patients were transferred to Saint-Sauveur hospital. The Comtesse hospital, named in memory of its founder, was transformed into a hospice for the elderly and an orphanage, known as des Bleuets, after WWI. Abandoned in 1939, the hospital was the subject of a long lease in 1943 between the City of Lilley and the hospice administration which stipulated the obligation to transform it into a museum.

The Hospice Comtesse museum is a municipal museum of ethnography and folklore, located at Rue de la Monnaie ,It is housed in a former Hospice Comtesse, founded in 1237 by Jeanne de Constantinople, countess of Flanders. The works, which evoke the history and the decorative arts of Lille, are presented in the building of the community of the Augustinian Sisters who managed the hospice for more than 500 years, On the ground floor, the furniture, works of art, paintings, presented in the earthenware tiled kitchen, the refectory, the parlor, the prioress’s apartments, the pharmacy and the linen room, allow us to find the atmosphere of Flemish interiors of the 17-18C as the nuns knew them. Upstairs, in the old dormitory, a selection of works, carved wood, paintings, ceramics, objects and documents, illustrate the history of the city from the 16C to the French revolution. This second part of the museum is organized into six sections:  Lille architecture and its sculpted decor. The witnesses of the ancient city (section I),  Arnould  de Vuez and the Conclave Hall. The figures of power (section II), Weights and measures. Administrative power (section III), Corporations and brotherhoods. Market dynamism (section IV), The Watteaus of Lille. From major events to popular celebrations (section V) ,and Scientific life. Objects of exploration: new worlds (section VI)., Exhibitions are regularly organized in the old sick room.
