The Church Saint Sauveur of Lille !!

Again, for the story, It took me a while , worse when you have family about an hour from the city. But often said, living and visiting are two different things . When in the area stay with family and this time again, however, did it in reverse order, when to see Lille and its sights, (stay tune for posts), and then went to see family. I went by them and feel should be in my blog as well. Therefore, let me tell you about the Church Saint Sauveur of Lille !! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Saint-Sauveur Church 97 Rue Saint-Sauveur in the Lille Centre district;  built between 1898-1902, the original church having been destroyed by a fire in 1896. Its construction on the site of an old Gothic church that burned down in 1896 took place from 1898 to 1902. On this site there existed a Gothic style church from the 14C which gave its name to the Lille-Saint-Sauveur district.

The Church Saint Sauveur was topped by a spire which served as a point of focus for the artillerymen of the Austrian armies during the siege of 1792 (French revolution) ,and which was not rebuilt, The church is a three-nave brick, sandstone and limestone church built according to a Latin cross plan. The transept crossing is covered by a dome. A  culde  covers the choir and the bell tower is at the back of the chevet. The bell tower houses four bells cast in 1923 and baptized on January 28, 1923.

Some elements of the old church have been preserved, in particular the five stained glass windows of the choir (1867), the main altar (1879-1882) and the altar of Saint-Anges (1884) in the north arm of the transept, The church also contains exceptional oak furniture (organ case, monumental pulpit, confessionals), The gallery organ dates from 1902. The Choir organ was installed at the Notre-Dame de Fives Church, the latter’s gallery organ awaiting restoration. It also contains a painting from 1732 by the Lille painter Lamoral de Daudenarde,” Let the little children come to me”
