The Pont Canal d’Agen !!!

I drive you down to a wonderful region of my belle France and its wonders. I decided to space out this wonderful site on a post of its own in my blog. This time let’s travel to the south the old Aquitaine, and wonderful Agen , the Pont Canal, Hope you enjoy the post as I.

Agen  is a town of thousands years old on the hills of the Ermitage that was the original site of the gallois town of Nitiobroges and a history connected always to the Garonne river. The town today is about 140 km from Bordeaux and 115 km from Toulouse. It is in the Lot et Garonne dept 47 of the Nouvelle Aquitaine region.

In August 25, 1839. The first stone was laid by the Duke of Orléans, eldest son of Louis-Philippe and Princess Hélène of Mecklenburg, his wife. In 1841, the works were stopped. The bridge will be used for some time by farmers’ carts to avoid a detour via the old stone bridge. On May 5, 1846, a law imposed the resumption of work and the bridge was completed in 1847. But that was not the end of the worries. This bridge could perhaps have become railway: In 1850, The exclusive supporters of the railway raise the question of filling the trench of the canal as a whole to establish the rails there. It will be necessary to wait until March 1856 so that the whole of the side channel to the Garonne was finished. It is 540 meters long or 580 meters if we count the junction areas , the second longest in France, the canal bridge comprises 4 levies with 23 arches with an opening of 20 meters and 10 meters high.T he side channel became economically inoperative with the establishment of the Bordeaux-Valence railway line in May 1856.

This canal bridge of Agen, allows it to cross the Garonne river from the right bank to the left bank, The pont canal d’Agen was ordered built by Napoléon Ier after visiting Agen in 1808; it took a while, The Bridge Canal is also directly accessible to everyone, thanks to a simple staircase as I did. A popular spot for joggers and cyclists in particular, the building is a great starting point for a family outing. In 2016, renovation work on the canal bridge, now lit at night, was completed.
