I like to tell you a bit more on the beautiful garden on this post.

Vaux le Vicomte castle gardens from André Le Nôtre gardener expo may23The gardens have a maximum length (from the gate of honor to the Hercules) of 1,500 meters, and an average width of 200 to 250 meters, The park has a total area of 500 ha and is enclosed by a perimeter wall of 13 km, To draw them, its designer, Le Nôtre, used optical effects and the laws of perspective; the red of the embroideries and the parterres is made of crushed brick. The arrival at the castle is made by a bilateral alignment of 257 plane trees. The two lines of trees are very close to the roadway since they are only six meters apart. Together with the thick boles of the trees, this causes an impressive tunneling effect; this is a 1,400 meter long alignment, The garden consists of three parts: the first includes a courtyard and a forecourt; the second leaves from the castle and stops at the small canals; and the third part consists of what is located beyond the small channels.

The crown parterre, on the left, has a golden royal crown located in the center of a basin, in homage to the king, whose ground floor bedroom is also located in the left part of the park. These two parterres are asymmetrical with respect to the central axis of the garden. The castle is reflected in the square basin, located 500 meters from it. It is for the grand canal that Le Nôtre does the most work , View from the castle the cave seems to be located just after the grand basin, but between them is the grand canal, 875 meters long and 35 wide. The cave ,located beyond the Grand Canal, is due to Le Nôtre and Le Brun who designed the sculptures. Caves have been popular since the Renaissance, when ancient villas were discovered buried in the ground, giving rise to the word grotesque for their painted or carved walls, which became a decorative motif. Facing the cave are the waterfalls, invisible from the castle. This type of architecture, recent in France and dates from the first half of the 17C. The cave is largely made of rough stone. The river statues on the sides represent the Tiber and L’Anqueil. It is framed by stairs, ramps and terraces. At the foot of the stairs are four sculptures dating from the 19C, which were planned at the time of Nicolas Fouquet.

In 1891, Alfred Sommier (then owner of the castle) had a large-format gilt bronze reproduction of the famous Farnese Hercules installed above the basin of the Gerbe, which constitutes the final point of view of the long axial perspective. This sculpture is the second largest gilded statue in France, after the statue of the Madonna and Child in the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde basilica, in Marseille

The Château Vaux le Vicomte have written plenty on it in my blog but this is new text and pictures from my visit this week, so sorry if repeat myself on the text, As a reminder, the castle is in the village of  Maincy, Seine et Marne dept 77 of the Île de France region of my belle France!

Again, I like to tell you the story in the the large stables of the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, and discover an exhibition of magnificent vintage carriages and more. Take a step back in time! Carriages, harnesses, harnessed horses, coachmen, valets and passengers revive, the time of the visit, the art of master builders. The carriages of the 17C, 18C and 19C are presented in decorations on the themes of the city, the countryside and hunting. In the second part of the museum, the estate offers an exhibition of two trades: the saddler and the blacksmith. Finally, the Crew Museum ends with an exhibition of equipment for horses. Harnesses, bridles, bits and other maintenance equipment that will delight equestrian enthusiasts like us.   These centuries-old carriages, horses and coachmen bear witness to history. The museum is an integral part of the castle and the gardens, so they are included in the general admission price.A must to see and first on the visit circuit.

A bit of a description with some of my favorites ; difficult to tell more as the description comes from the castle as I am friend of the castle for years. However, this time took pictures lol!

The carriage museum created inside the stables and outbuildings of the property. Presented next to the reconstruction of a forge, it rubs shoulders with other service carriages, fire engine, game car. One of the common activities of the nobility was hunting. To bring the prey back, game carriages were used. The wicker carriage is equipped with numerous hooks allowing to suspend the killed game.

The litter carriage presents us with one of the rare examples remaining in France. This mule chair was used for city trips and was led by footmen. This carriage, which is said to have been built in France, is lined with crimson damask and decorated with gilding and landscape paintings.

In the 17C, a fast carriage appeared; the post chair. The creation is credited in 1664 or 1679, the first post chairs were invented by a certain de la Gruyère. The exclusive privilege is granted to the Marquis de Créan. It was suspended from Dalesme springs and leather loungers, its body, supported by two large wheels, can only be accessed by a door on the front. The postilion was mounted on the left on this team of two or three horses.

The Briska was a type of carriage of Russian origin. The flat-bottomed box can be transformed into a berth. The hood, while bending down, protects travelers to a certain extent from rain and wind. This travel carriage, harnessed to 2.4, or 6 horses, was driven by a coachman or a postilion.

The sleeper carriage is not a type of carriage proper but the adaptation of sedans or coupes for long trips. The front and rear panels, fitted with leather bellows, allowed a perfect seal. Depending on the size of the carriage, comfort could be limited, sleeping more like a lounge chair than a real bed. These carriages were often used by the military. Everyone, for example, has heard of Napoleon’s sleeper. It was the carriage of choice for generals and marshals. It was fitted at the rear with a saber box, belonged to General Le Grand de Mercey. It was built in 1805 in Beirut.

La Coureuse carriage was a splendid 8-spring carriage built by A.Getting in Paris in 1840 and belonged to Lord Lonsdale. The large coupe or gala coupe; this carriage is a variation of the sedan, of which or would have removed the front. It belonged to the Noailles family and would have been used by Charles X to flee Paris during the 1830 revolution. The frame of the coachman’s seat is hidden by a richly decorated sheet cover.

The Horse-drawn carriage ; this name is often used in the wrong way as a generic term for horse-drawn carriages. It actually designates a horse-drawn vehicle that corresponds to a specific type of carriage of rare elegance. Luxury discovery carriage with two bottoms, each containing a seat for two people. It is accessed by two small open doors in the center of the side panels. Only the rear seat is sheltered by a hood. The one here belonged to Count Mollé, Prime Minister of Louis Philippe, king of the French.

The Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, located in Maincy, yes  a very small village about 50 km or 30 miles from Paris near the town of Melun, about 6 km and 52 km from my nostalgic Meaux, Maincy has managed to preserve both its characteristics as a Briard village and a quality natural environment. The charm of its streets and alleys traversed by an omnipresent water gives it undeniable tourist assets. First village in the Île-de-France region to receive the « Petite Cité de caractère » or Small City of Character label.

The castle of Vaux-le-Vicomte represent a French feodal architecture with four buildings ,two of rectangular shape along the gardens and two square along the courtyard; it has a Rotonda, Italian style in the center room with the king’s apartement on the left and the apt for Nicolas Fouquet on the right, the central room is of an oval shape something unique for the times.

Illustration of the genius of Le Vau, the castle will captivate you from the steps by the delicacy of its facade with the pediment sculpted with squirrels, emblem of Fouquet, and its view across the gardens. Crossing the threshold, you enter the intimacy of a large 17C residence. Woodwork, paintings and sculptures adorn the rooms highlighted by the beauty of Le Brun’s decorations. The furniture and decoration are beautifully preserved, from the King’s Chamber and its stuccoes enhanced with gold leaf, to the Fouquet’s Chamber decorated with works of art by the master of the house. In the basement, immerse yourself in the effervescence of the kitchens of the famous butler Vatel, who went down in history for having ended his life while in the service of the Grand Condé, because the catch of the day was arrived late…

The Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte was designed in the 1650s by the greatest artists of the time: the architect Louis Le Vau, the painter Charles Le Brun, the landscape architect André Le Nôtre, the master mason Michel Villedo , and butler François Vatel, Their talent had already been brought together by the young Louis XIV to build the classic Château de Vincennes in 1651-3. The king will call on them again to build the Château de Versailles, that of Vaux-le-Vicomte then serving as a model. Started in 1653, it took artists 8 years to build this magnificent estate, At the age of 24, Fouquet acquired the lands of Vaux-le-Vicomte thanks to the dowry of his first wife and at the age of 35, he bought the title of public prosecutor in the parliament of Paris. He anchors his network there thanks to the family of his 2nd wife. This meteoric rise does not only attract him friends… even if he has many. Fouquet disturbs and some high-placed people await his downfall. Jean-Baptiste Colbert who is the strongest and who will help bring down Fouquet. Both ministers of Louis XIV, the rivalry between the 2 men is lively. Colbert only wants one thing: to take Fouquet’s place and become Louis XIV’s Superintendent of Finances. In May 1661, Colbert succeeded in convincing Louis XIV to arrest Nicolas Fouquet, on the grounds of personal enrichment and the crime of lèse-majesté On August 17, 1661, Fouquet organized a sumptuous party in honor of the king. Three weeks later, Fouquet was arrested in Nantes by D’Artagnan, and thrown into prison. He is just over 45 years old. His trial will last 3 years. Thanks to the magistrate Olivier Lefèvre d’Ormesson (ancestor of Jean d’Ormesson), he avoids the death penalty and should “only” be banned. But it is without counting on the will of the king who wishes to make Fouquet disappear and condemns him to life imprisonment. Fouquet died, alone, at the age of 65, in the Pignerol prison (located in the Alps). Rid of Fouquet, the king confiscates all the works of art amassed by Fouquet in his castle of Vaux-de-Vicomte: tapestries, furniture, paintings, books, carpets. There is nothing left.
