The Church San Estebàn of Segovia !

Ok so I am back in this wonderful Castilian town of my love. I heard about since birth, but finally came to see it in 1990 and has been an everlasting love affairs since. Of course, I am talking about Segovia ,in the Province of Segovia, and the autonomous region of Castilla y Léon! However, some monuments don’t get the recognition they deserve even in my previous posts touch only by word. I like to split these monuments into single entries and tell you on each as they deserve, It is time I tell you a bit more about the Church San Estebàn of Segovia!

The Church or Iglesia San Estebàn located at the Plaza San Estebàn is of Mudejar style with a polygonal body apse surmounting another straight one; four Mudejar tombs from the 16C with filigree plasterwork, and, in addition, a Renaissance altarpiece. Raised on a terrace of the Cuéllar wall, it is perhaps the fundamental brick Romanesque building of the Cuellar school,

Built between the 12C and 13C, it is a church with three naves, the Romanesque elements being preserved, the arcaded gallery and the majestic tower, probably the best Romanesque tower in Castile. The capitals, beautifully decorated, offer a good and varied sculptural decoration. Among them, those that narrate the Adoration, present fantastic animals or show vegetal motifs stand out.

But without a doubt, the most attractive is the majestic 53 meter high tower (highest in Roman Spanish) and its portentous bell tower (even if cannot be climb). Built in late Roman style on perfect blocks of yellowish sandstone that powerfully reflects the sunlight, it is divided into 6 sections, separated by imposts decorated with floral motifs, which become lighter as they gain height. The first is solid, the next two have two blind arches on each face, the two immediately above repeat this arrangement, but with open and clearly flared arches, and the upper one has three smaller and flared openings. The interior is Baroque in style as was rebuilt in the 18C.

The quest continues for more, as Spain is everything under the sun! Never amazes me to find wonderful places to see ,no wonder is the no 2 spot on Earth for visitors . And numbers are from WTO-UN or United Nations World Tourism Organisation ,keeping numbers on travelers since 1949! Hope you enjoy this post on the Church San Estebàn of Segovia as I.

And remember, happy travels, good health, and many cheers to all !!!
