This is Marlow in England !!!

This time took my road warrior skills to go again to jolly England with the Le Shuttle train service (see post), and my Ford ; towing along my good boys and wonderful Rex! It was a very nice trip going into the countryside and seeing several towns of wonderul architecture and history, This one is a must and one of our highlights of the trip, we had our encounter with Marlow, and it was nice! Therefore, let me tell you on this is Marlow in England !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Marlow is on the River Thames in Buckinghamshire, England, It is located 4 miles (6 km) from High Wycombe, 5 miles (8 km) from Maidenhead , 33 miles (53 km) from central London. The A4155 road runs through Marlow town centre, with the A404 lying one mile to the east, the M40 motorway further to the north, and the M4 motorway to the south

There has been a Marlow Bridge over the Thames since the reign of King Edward III. The current bridge is a suspension bridge, designed in 1832, and was constructed by 1835, Marlow is the location of Marlow Lock, originating from the 14C ; it is about 300 meters downstream of the bridge,

Every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month explore the local food and drink market from 10h to 15h which takes place at The Causeway which is located at the Bridge end of Marlow High Street, by the green outside the George & Dragon public house.

The City/Town Hall was built in 1807 in the style néoclassique ,For a long time it housed the Crown Hotel before becoming the Town Hall, It was arcaded on the ground floor, so that markets could be held, with a large assembly room on the first floor. The design involved a symmetrical main frontage with three bays facing onto the Market Square; on the first floor there were three sash windows with blind panels above flanked by Doric order pilasters supporting an entablature. At roof level, there was a short central clock tower surmounted by a turret with a weather vane. The clock struck the hours on the larger of the two bells in the turret (the other bell was used to raise the alarm in event of a fire). A lock-up for petty criminals was established behind the left-hand arch, The building is today a luxe Cinema under the Everyman Cinema

It took my fancy on the Thames river to see this building and it is gorgeous ! The fabulous, four-star, Compleat Angler is located on the willow-fringed banks of the River Thames, Dating back to the 17C, the hotel takes its name from Isaak Walton’s world-famous book on angling. Most of the 64 rooms and suites have lovely river views while others are within sight and sound of cascading water over Marlow Weir.

Amorino Italian ices is located at 105 High St , directly opposite the main entrance to Higginson Park,It offers ice cream and sorbet, sundaes and milkshakes, ice cream macarons, crêpes, waffles, hot drinks, frozen desserts, and gourmet grocery items. Amorino was founded in Paris in 2002 by two Italian childhood friends, Cristiano Sereni and Paolo Benassi; the company began franchising in France in 2004 and expanded internationally starting in 2008. We follow them everywhere and glad we saw them in Marlow and of course we went in !

Other things to see here are the Marlow Museum is a small one room museum offers the chance to explore over 5000 years of the towns history. Opening times change with the seasons. Take a walk in Higginson Park, an area of 23 acres with frontage on to the River Thames and the Thames Trail passes through the park.  Marlow Place , the finest Georgian house in Marlow built for the Earl of Portsmouth circa 1720, Shelley House , a plaque on No 104 West Street marks the home of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and his wife Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein whilst living there Marlow Common is great to explore and discover the WWI training trenches.

A gripping cosy crime and mystery series ‘The Marlow Murder Club’, by Robert Thorogood, the creator of the hit TV series Death in Paradise, sets a series of murders in and around Marlow. And we watch it !

A bit of history I like tell us that the name is recorded in 1015 as Mere lafan, meaning “Land left after the draining of a pond” in Old English , From Norman times the manor, parish, and later borough were formally known as Great Marlow, distinguishing them from Little Marlow .In 1897 the urban district was renamed Marlow Urban District, and the town has been known simply as Marlow. The town owed its importance to its location on the River Thames, where the road from Reading to High Wycombe crosses the river. It had its own market by 1227, although the market lapsed before 1600. Marlow’s status as a regional commercial centre was present even before the first bridge in this area was built in the 13C due to the settlement acting as an inland port. A 14C hall, known as ‘The Old Parsonage’ built in Marlow on St Peters Street is currently the oldest inhabited building in Buckinghamshire.
