The All Saints Church of Marlow in England !!!

This time took my road warrior skills to go again to jolly England with the Le Shuttle train service (see post), and my Ford ; towing along my good boys and wonderful Rex! It was a very nice trip going into the countryside and seeing several towns of wonderul architecture and history, This one is a must and one of our highlights of the trip, we had our encounter with Marlow, and it was nice! Therefore, let me tell you on the All Saints Church of Marlow in England !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

Next to the bridge along the Thames river is All Saints Church, at the bottom of the High Street. A church has been part of Marlow since 1070, The present church is a Victorian creation. The old building was demolished, and a new church constructed of Bath stone, topped by a graceful spire soaring 170 above the town. The combination of spire and bridge form one of the most unforgettable Thames sights. A large parish church. 1832 to 1835 in Perp style . Later phases ;chancel added in 1875-6; nave remodelled and 6-bay arcades in 1881-2; nave re-roofed 1889; upper part of the tower and spire rebuilt 1898-99. The Tower contains a ring of 8-bells, dated 1834, the 2nd of 1827, the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th of 1719. There is also a Sanctus bell of 1694.

The All Saints Church was built to replace an earlier church that was subject to flooding and whose wooden tower and spire collapsed in 21st December 1831. There was a succession of churches on the previous site dating back to 1000. The present church was consecrated in 1835 Originally built in the 1100s and reconstructed after a Victorian fire in 1832, it features Gothic-style architecture complemented by Victorian stained glass windows and monuments. The church is recognized for its scenic location near the riverbank and its prominent position next to Marlow’s Suspension Bridge (see post) constructed in 1860. The locals report that it serves as both a place of worship and community activity, supporting local programs like Meals Marlow. Visitors appreciate its welcoming atmosphere, beautiful interior including an impressive Willis organ from 1876, and features such as historical wall monuments. It attracts those interested in architecture, history, peaceful environments, and community engagement.

This All Saints Church contained, among other fittings, at least 3–beautiful brasses, which were destroyed. Rubbings of these, however, are Preserved in the Craven Ord Collection at the British Museum and in the Franks Collection at the Society of Antiquaries. One of these, to William, John, Louis, & John, four sons of Sir John & Dame Joan Salesbury, who died in 1383–8, was extremely fine; in the upper part was represented the Resurrection & below the kneeling figures of the Sons in Adoration with a Shield of Salesbury, all within a marginal Inscription with the symbols of the Evangelists at the corners. Another was to John Warner, Rector, who died in 1421 & included a figure of a Priest in Mass vestments & part of a marginal Inscription. A 3rd included 2–Priests in Mass vestments of about 1450 & an Inscription on 1-Slab. Besides these, there were some other inscriptions & fragments.

In the South Aisle is an Alabaster & Marble Monument to Katherine wife of William Willoughby, 1597. On the West Wall of the narthex is a Monument to Sir Miles Hobart, Kt, erected by Parliament in 1640; he died in 1632 as the result of a coach accident, which is represented on the tomb. A monument with shields of arms in the North Aisle is to William Horsepoole of Gray’s Inn, 1642, his wife Mary daughter & heir of Lawrence Washington, 1644, 2-daughters & 4-grandchildren.  In the Vestry is a curious picture painted by Coventry of a black & white spotted boy who died in 1812. His Master, John Richardson, spent his early years in a Workhouse here, but afterwards amassed a considerable fortune as an itinerant showman.  A stone in the churchyard marks his burial in the same grave as the spotted boy.
