The Plaza de Callao of Madrid !!!

One of the emblematic street of my dear Madrid! . I like to take you up on this square as found me new pictures in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me. Got to tell more of the history of this great artery of my beloved Madrid. The square is so popular , that I have overlook writing about it. It is so essential of Madrid, well you could not come to the city without walking it at least. The Plaza del Callao is part of the history of Madrid, and all is represented there. Therefore, here is my take on the Plaza del Callao of Madrid !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Plaza del Callao square is located in the Sol neighborhood, part of the Centro district. It lies at the end of Calle del Carmen and divides Calle Preciados into two sections, as well as marking the beginning of the third section of Gran Vía, which ends at Plaza de España. The Plaza del Callao, like the second section of Gran Vía, (see post). This avenue has always been known for its bustling commercial activity, neon lights, and cinemas. The metro Callao station is served by lines 3 and 5. Line 3 runs from Moncloa to El Casar, passing through Sol Station, while Line 5 runs from Alameda de Osuna to Casa de Campo.

The Plaza de Callao is an icon and one of the best places in Madrid to stroll, shop, or start a wonderful day of sightseeing in the city. At the end of the 20C, a square was built between Calle Preciados and Gran Vía, which quickly became one of Madrid’s most popular spots: Plaza del Callao. One of its main attractions is that it has preserved intact the buildings that witnessed its creation, such as the Palacio de la Prensa (Press Palace, dating from 1928), the Carrión Building (1933), and the legendary Cine Callao (1927). From Plaza del Callao, you can easily reach historic streets like Calle Preciados, Calle del Carmen, and Gran Vía. All of this, combined with the constant activity that characterizes Callao, makes this square an icon of Madrid and one of its most representative places. Moreover, its strategic location at the end of the Gran Vía and just a few meters from the Puerta del Sol makes Callao an essential stop on any Madrid itinerary. You’ll love it!

The Calle de Jacometrezo converges at this famous square; between it and Gran Vía stands the Edificio Carrión. Calle Preciados is also located here. This street is very famous in the city, home to numerous fashion boutiques, as well as a large department store belonging to the El Corte Inglés group. It is the most expensive shopping street in Spain, ranking twelfth among the world’s most expensive streets for rent. Calle Postigo de San Martín continues to Calle Arenal and Calle Mayor. Parallel to Calle Preciados is Calle del Carmen , also famous and bustling with commercial activity. Our favorite areas,

Several notable buildings stand out in the square: the Carrión Building, built in 1933, with 14 floors, was one of the tallest buildings of its time in Madrid: Gran Vía 41. The Press Palace, built in 1928, at no, 46, with 14 floors, was the tallest building in Madrid until the Telefónica Building, at 88 meters, also on Gran Vía, surpassed it. The La Adriática Building, designed in 1926: Gran Vía 39. The Fnac Building (formerly Galerías Preciados): a five-story post-war building occupied by the Fnac chain. The Cine Callao building, from 1927, at no 3, and the Metropolis Building, Madrid’s first skyscraper; The Edificio España, at 117 meters, built in 1953, and the Torre de Madrid, at 142 meters, which was once the tallest skyscraper in Europe, are notable landmarks.

A bit of history I like tell us that the Plaza del Callao existed before the major urban renewal project that resulted in the construction of Gran Vía in 1910; its site was located beneath the San Martín neighborhood. This space was named in honor of the Battle of Callao. When construction of the Gran Vía began on February 4, 1917, the square began to expand thru1922, although the final handover of the works didn’t take place until 1927. In 1952, the Galerías Preciados department store (then our fav store) was established on the square, its developer being the industrialist Pepín Fernández. It occupied the site of the recently demolished Hotel Florida building. In the subsequent renovation, following its inauguration on July 1, 1960, the square acquired its current appearance. In late 2009 and early 2010, the entire square was pedestrianized, and the adjacent Calle de Jacometrezo was adapted to accommodate the bus traffic that had previously been served by the square.
