I have written on many aspects of the Retiro Park in my blog as it is the essence and lungs of Madrid, rich history and memories of youth. I lived not far from it, and used to walk its alleys and greens all over as a youth, then as an adult came to it on every trip to Madrid as if doing a pilgrimage to a sacred place. It is for me always will be Retiro, my park. And,yes even if came on a business trip, I went here like a pilgrim! Therefore, let me tell you a bit on the Casita del Pescador of the Parque del Buen Retiro of Madrid !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I
The Casita del Pescador del Buen Retiro or the Fisherman’s Cottage in Buen Retiro Park is one of the small, romantic buildings commissioned by King Fernando VII in Retiro Park for the exclusive use of the monarchy. It is surrounded by a pond and forms a private garden and relaxation area. It currently houses an information point for Retiro Park (tourist info kiosk). It is at Paseo de Fernán Núñez, with outside closest streets on the corner of Calle de O’Donnel and Avenida Menendez Pelayo.

The Fisherman’s Cottage near the artificial mountain, was begun in 1817 built with plastered brick walls, with central openings with niches adorned with Pompeian moldings, and topped with an attic roofed with zinc sheets. It is a small house of square shape and two levels with roof in zinc and water spouts ;of the original royal properties still standing there The whole building resembles a Madrid building from the Habsburg era. It is surrounded by a small pond where the king apparently fished. The building is located on a platform in the middle of a pond surrounded by a metal fence, installed after the Spanish Civil War to replace the previous wooden structure. It is one of the few remaining examples of the constructions that adorned the private gardens of royalty, when Retiro Park belonged to the Crown.

Nestled in the vast and lush Retiro Park, the Casita del Pescador is a charming and historically significant structure that transports visitors to the early 19C, this picturesque retreat embodies the Romantic ideals of the time. As part of a broader initiative to enhance the park’s aesthetic appeal, the Casita del Pescador was designed to mimic a small fisherman’s cottage, with its rustic stone walls and thatched roof, all set against a backdrop of tranquil pools and lush vegetation. The Casita del Pescador is not only a testament to the architectural and cultural trends of its time, but also an iconic landmark of Retiro Park. It reflects the growing appreciation of nature and pastoral simplicity that marked the Romantic period. Over the years, this cottage served as a serene refuge for the royal family and their guests, playing a crucial role in transforming Retiro Park into a public space for leisure and relaxation. Today, Casita del Pescador continues to captivate visitors with its historic charm and picturesque settings.
