The Gara de Nord of Bucharest !!!

I have been lucky to visit Bucharest 7 times in the last 10 years, and even if stop nowdays the memories will stay for a longer time. The pictures were found in my cd rom vault and should be in my blog for you and me, The city has been called the Little Paris, and even the Paris of the East, I like to show you a place I passed by several times and even went to get friends at the train station. Many memories and good friends over the years. Always looking forward to be back, eventually, Therefore, let me tell you a bit on the Gara de Nord of Bucharest !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Gara de Nord or North train Station of Bucharest is a terminal station serving several lines. It is located in Sector 1, north of downtown Bucharest. The station has a passenger building with ticket offices, information points, and waiting rooms. It is equipped with ticket vending machines and a luggage storage area. It is served by domestic trains operated by CFR, the Romanian State Railways, as well as international trains. The station is served by the Gara de Nord metro stations of lines M1 and M4 , by tram stations of lines 42, 44, 45, and 46, and by several city bus lines with stops nearby. There are currently 14 tracks and 8 platforms.

Named “Gara Târgoviștei,” it opened in 1870, when the Bucharest-Ploiesti line opened. The official inauguration took place on September 13, 1872. It was renamed Gara de Nord in 1888. After undergoing regular modifications, the main building took on its current appearance in 1932. The complex is one of the country’s most important transport hubs, with trains to Hungary, Bulgaria, and Austria. It houses numerous small shops, cafes, fast-food outlets, as well as ATMs, newsagents, and a left-luggage office. The Inter Regio (IR) trains are the fastest. Bucharest is also connected to several foreign cities: Budapest, but also Vienna and Chișinău, as well as Thessaloniki, Sofia, and Istanbul in the summer. The building consisted of three buildings, arranged in a U-shape, whose central pavilion supported the symmetry of the whole by means of two identical towers; placed perpendicularly, built in the neoclassical style, it was intended for travelers, marking the main access route. For further info the Tourist Information Center,  Bucharest are located at 68-70 Victoriei  Street, and 47 Lipscani Street (old town),

A bit of history tell us that after the bankruptcy of the Strousberg Consortium, the building and the railways returned to the possession of the Romanian State in 1880. From 1883, the famous Orient Express train, the main means of transport for Romanian intellectuals in the emigration, stopped on the main platform. After more than a century of existence, one could say that the Gara de Nord represents the most discreet accomplice in the history of Romania, having resisted earthquakes, wars and changes of political regime, witnessing the passage of dozens of generations of Romanians, but also monarchs, men of culture, military personnel or simple tourists…

  1. I used this station to take the night train to Chisinau, an experience of old trains. The station is not in good condition and its activity is below capacity, but it remains functional.
