The Piazza della Repubblica of Rome !!!

A very memorable picture found in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, When I took the family on vacation ,they wanted to visit Rome, been there before on business trips but this time the gang came along for a wonderful time, While in town, my team did a lot of walking taking public transports on a needed basis , and we came to see this wonderful part of Rome, I believe the Piazza della Repubblica of Rome, deserves a post on their own , and so therefore, here it is, Hope you enjoy it as I.

The Republic Square or Piazza della Repubblica in Rome is a circular square near Termini train Station. It is served by the Repubblica metro station, and we also passed by it on bus line 62 (see post), It is bordered by the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, (see post) built in the middle of the Baths of Diocletian. It was originally called “Piazza Esedra” in reference to the exedra of the Roman baths., On March 20 1953 it was renamed Piazza della Repubblica even thus many locals still call it Piazza Esedra.

The most impressive here and worth seeing is the Fountain of the Naiads or Fontana delle Naiadi  located at the centere of the square. The current structure replaced a temporary fountain which had been inaugurated on 10 September 1870. The new fountain was built in 1888 and was decorated it with four plaster lions, In 1897, the sculptor Mario Rutelli created a set of bronze statues which replaced the lions. The new version of the fountain was inaugurated in 1901, Rutelli’s original center piece was considered unsuitable and moved to the garden of the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II (see post). It was replaced by a 1912 sculpture group by Rutelli before the fountain was re-inaugurated in 1914, The fountain basin is circular and made of concrete. It includes a high central water jet and a number of lateral jets,  At night, the fountain is illuminated by LED lights, Around the basin are four bronze sculptures depicting naiads, who are water nymphs from  classical mythology. They are the Nymph of the Lakes, who is shown together with a swan, the Nymph of the Rivers, who rests on a river monster, Oceanina ,the Nymph of the Oceans, who is taming a wild horse representing waves, and the Nymph of Groundwater, who reclines on a dragon’s back. At the centre of the fountain, a sculpture of the sea god Glaucus symbolises the domination over natural forces. Glaucus is depicted as a naked and muscular man ,and holds a dolphin from whose mouth the central jet emerges. The Fountain of the Naiads is associated with Art Nouveau, of which it is regarded as one of the principal examples in Rome.
