The Teatro Lara of Madrid !!!

We always love to be back in my dear Madrid, love it !! We come by car ,of course and one time by plane, I found me an older paper picture in my vault that should be here in my blog for you and me, I like to tell you more of the wonders of Madrid even just passing by them, Therefore, let me tell you a bit on the Teatro Lara of Madrid !!! Hope you enjoy it as I,

The theater was built by Cándido Lara, from whom it takes its name, was inaugurated on 3rd September 1880. It was inaugurated during the reign of Alfonso XII, before there was electric light, the Metro or the Gran Vía. Its small size, with a current capacity of 460 spectators, together with its singular beauty, has made it known since its inauguration as the “Bombonera de Don Cándido”, the name of its patron who was a butcher by profession in the Plaza de Antón Martín and became a millionaire thanks to his supplies to the royal armies against the Carlists. It is located on Corredera Baja de San Pablo street with its back facing Calle San Roque (very close to Gran Via and metro Callao lines 3 and 5), the hall is accessed from a large entrance hall decorated with cast iron columns, which becomes the foyer of the Teatro Lara. The only façade on Corredera Baja de San Pablo street is inspired by the French style that prevailed at the time, with a system of four arches, with lanterns brought from Paris and with holes to hang the theatre posters. It still preserves the royal box that was used by Alfonso XII and XIII, who were regulars at the theater due to their never-hidden love for the “world”.

The Teatro Lara has two rooms equipped for the performance of all kinds of shows. The Sala Càndido Lara is the main hall, with over 460 seats, and is where the theater’s largest performances take place. A hall where music, dance and all kinds of artistic expression also have a place. The Sala Lola Membrives is the small hall and has a capacity for around 120 people. It is an open and dynamic space where the theater’s less conventional and more innovative performances take place.

A bit of history I like tell us, it had a permanent company of great prestige until the beginning of the 1960s. The Teatro Lara continued to function normally until the 1980s, when the economic crisis of that time and the temporary decline of the theater caused its temporary closure. In 1994 it was reopened by Luis Ramírez, who ended up shaking up the dormant theatrical world of the time by successfully importing the American musical to Spain. Since then, the Teatro Lara has remained open, demonstrating the important role it plays in the cultural life of the city. In the 2008 season, it launched a project whose intention was to renovate one of the most emblematic spaces in Madrid. Thus, the Teatro Lara opened its doors again, with a commercial but quality programme, capable of once again gathering a loyal audience to this space. Along with the theatrical programme, the theater, also accommodates music, poetry, or any artistic expression, becoming the plural and free space that it has always been.

In here came directors such as Antonio Riquelme, actresses such as Lola Membrives, Balbina Valverde, Rosario Pino, Leocadia Alba, Catalina Barcena, the great Jerónima Llorente, actors such as Ruiz de Arana, Ricardo Zamacois, Thulier, and playwrights such as Echegaray, Benavente, etc. passed through . Important titles in the history of Spanish theater, such as Los inversiones creados de Jacinto Benavente (1907), El amor Brujo (1895), or Canción de cuna were premiered here.
