The adjoining Benedictine abbey of St Remi dated from the 18C ,currently house the Muséé Saint Remi museum at 53 rue Simon. Also known as the Saint-Remi History Museum invites you to embark on a journey through the history of Reims and the surrounding region from its origins, with an extensive tour involving historical re-enactments and scale models of its buildings. Archaeological artefacts, artistic collections, and everyday objects tell the story of this ancient, medieval metropolis. Gallo-Roman collections in particular, Discover the statue of Saint Remi, the Bishop of Reims who baptised King Clovis, and follow in the footsteps of the monks, the guardians of the Holy Ampulla that was used to anoint the kings of France.

This is a wonderful Saint Remi Museum, a must to visit in Reims, me think, A bit of history I like tell us that the idea of transforming the old abbey into a museum dates from the 1950s. Indeed, while the abbey was a hospital, local scholarly societies of the 19C already used part of the cloister as a lapidary deposit. But it was not until August 1978 that the Directorate of the Museums of France and the City of Reims decided the official creation of the museum, A bit on the architecture making of it tell us that the large staircase, raised at the same time as the facade and integrated into a large space of bay windows, is in the axis of the transept of the church. It welcomes a portrait of the king, in a wrought iron ramps completed in 1778 The Capitulary room is one of the best preserved vestiges of the 12C state of the abbey. The piece served as a link between the cloister, the abbey rooms and the entrance to the church. The ground having been risen over time, the room has kept old paving parts, but also many carved capitals.

Some of the layout inside as best from the tourist office and museum site tell us (too much for me to remember it all!) The distribution of collections between the rooms is done on a a thematic and chronological order, First, the Cloister dating from 1709 , the former medieval visiting room, the grand staircase of honor (1778) and the chapter room of the Middle Ages evoke the architectural gaps of what was the royal abbey of Saint-Remi, guardian of the Saint bulbe serving at the coronations of the kings of France. These rooms also welcome works of painting in particular from the Reims school. The Gallo-Roman section is installed in the old refectories and kitchens of the 17C, on the ground floor. In these rooms you see mosaics, sculptures, steles and funeral pottery, and models Also, mention the tomb of Flavius Jovin, chief general of the Roman army in Gaul, originally from Reims, who is the most beautiful ancient marble sarcophagus preserved in France. The tapestry room houses the sumptuous hanging of the life of Saint Remi which, in ten large tapestries, retraces the episodes of life and the miracles of the Holy Apostle of Gaul. Made between 1523 and 1531, these tapestries were offered to the abbey by the Archbishop of Reims, Robert de Lenoncourt.

Three small rooms illustrate the history of the abbey and the basilica by means of a chronological presentation of a majority of objects from the archaeological excavations of the site (head of the Lothaire king, foot of the Candelab de Saint Remi, Limousins enamels , etc, The regional archeology section, located on the first floor, brings together seven large rooms allowing a chronological circuit ranging from prehistory to the end of the Middle Ages; It will be noted more particularly the vestiges of the cenotaph of the sons of the Augustus Emperor (year IV after Jesus Christ). The Gothic room honors the remains of the missing buildings of Reims, whether civilian, religious, military or funeral. See here ,the famous house of musicians of the 13C and the painting of the 17C representing the Saint-Nicaise church in ruins. The section of regional military history recalls that Reims has always been present at major military meetings in the history of France, from the war of Gaul to the Nazis surrender of May 7, 1945. It is one of the most Important collections of provincial museums consisting of weapons, equipment, period uniforms on models, hairstyles, documents, models reduced by ships and paintings including the famous load of the cuirassiers of Reichshoffen by Édouard Detaille.
