Another wonderful experience in my beloved Spain. Driven by it so many times eventually several years back decided to come in and it has been a stop ever since. Jaca in the heart of Aragon! This is a post arisen from the fact do not know how missed these pictures in my blog from the start !! I just found them and of course, they need to be in my blog !! Of course, plenty more written on Jaca in my blog. The city is in the province of Huesca, and autonomous community of Aragon , Therefore, here is my take on the Church of Santiago of Jaca !!! Hope you enjoy this post as I.

Since the 11C, this church located south of the medieval city, has given its name to one of Jaca’s oldest neighborhoods, that of Santiago, who since ancient times welcomed merchants and artisans who were dedicated to meet the needs of the pilgrims that arrived in the city of Santiago de Compostela. The Church of Santiago aka Church of Santo Domingo between 1614 and 1835, it functioned as a church of the convent that the Dominicans built in this neighborhood. This order also made important modifications in the church during this period. The apses were eliminated. In that resulting wall the entrance was placed and the main altar went on to the old porch. It was oriented towards the west, towards Santiago de Compostela, characteristic is peculiar in the Aragonese Romanesque .The most significant transformation was the reorientation of the temple, placing its headboard west, in the space of the ancient atrium, to direct it towards the tomb of the apostle in Santiago. For this, the Romanesque apses were cut and the entrance door opened on the new wall, as we currently see it.
In the second half of the 20C several restoration campaigns of the church were carried out. Among them the pictorial decoration of the dome on the dome . Notable are its altarpieces, among which the Dormicion de la Virgen or virgin’s sleeping ,Altarpiece of Santiago, located on the main altar. Inside you can also enjoy the Baptismal Pila of the Califal Style of the 10C and the beautiful Romanesque capitel of Master Esteban, whose work is spread along the Camino de Santiago. Thanks to the Libro de la Cadena or Book of the Chain of the Council of Jaca, we know that in 1088 the Bishop orders to rebuild the former Church of Santiago that was in ruins from a Sarracen invasion. Thus, the ruins of this previous church, possibly from the 9C, would serve as the basis for building the Church of Santiago, in a Romanesque style. In 1887 it was given to the Hermanas de la Caridad de Santa Ana or Sisters of the Charity of Saint Anne.

It has a collection of altarpieces from different churches of the diocese and other works of art such as an altarpiece of the Dormition of the Virgin of the 16C, from the church of Acumuer; an altarpiece of the Virgen del Rosario of the 17C, whose central paintings of the Virgin and Superior of San Vicente and Santa Francisca Romana both come from the Jaca Cathedral. ; an altarpiece of the Assumption of the Virgin, from the 17C, from Ruesta. ; Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, with various painting on the table of the 17C, The pictorial decoration of the dome ; it must be highlighted for its uniqueness, the Caliphate Arabic Baptismal font, in marble, probably from the 10C. It was placed on a Romanesque capitel from the cloister of the Jaca Cathedral today the font is close to the main altar on an alabaster shaft and the capitel is displayed in a showcase at the foot of one of the side halls.
