The Puente de Segovia of Madrid !!!

Oh yes Madrid has bridges as any city with a river going thru such as the Manzanares. I like to tell you about one of them with a post of its won, well deserve , me think in my dear Madrid , There are about 33 bridges (last I count them  ) some are pedestrians , others for trains transport, and even fewer are for automobiles. Therefore, on this post let me tell uou about the Puente de Segovia of Madrid !!! One of the mosst emblematic bridges of Madrid ,and one of my most favorite is the puente de Segovia, renaissance style located in the crossing of calle de Segovia with the Manzanares river, that historically one of the access to the city.  It was first known as the «puente segoviana»,with first reference of it’s construction dates from the 14C when king Alfonso XI of  Castilla ordered the construction in writing letters dated in 1345  and 1346.  The first drawing found of the bridge (16C) tell us it had nine arches or maybe 13.  The Segovia bridge is the oldest surviving bridge in Madrid.  Again, the ordered to built one was given by king  Felipe II  to his architect  Juan de Herrera,(same of the Monasterio de El Escorial , and Royal Palace of  Aranjuez, among others).  The work extended between 1582 and 1584.  In November 1936, during the  Spanich Civil War the bridge was blown up by the Republicann side to stop the entry to Madrid of Nationalist forces under General Yagüe.  After the war, it was rebuilt introducing new variations to its original design.  In the 1960’s it was again renovated to allow for the construction of the beltway  M-30, completed in 1974.  In 2007 ,this M-30 road went underground. In the creation of Madrid Rio (see post) it was has acted throughout the environment of the bridge providing it with accompaniment of fountains, ponds and walks consistent with the aesthetics and new design of the area.

The Puente de Segovia bridge, like the Manzanares river, were subject to mocked by novelists and poets of the Golden Age because the majesty of the bridge was eclipsed by the little flow of the river. Francisco de Quevedo, Luis Luis Góngora, Lope de Vega or Tirso de Molina came to dedicate verses to the bridge,

Then, move to Perth Amboy ,New Jersey USA (living there 13 yrs) ; where I completed high school, became a US Citizen, learned to drive a car, and learned English. Afterward, went to the university in Florida, ERAU, and upon graduation decided to moved there to Ormond by the Sea, near Daytona Beach, finally moving North Miami, then Hialeah, then another moved to Silver Lakes division in Miramar, Broward county, Florida; in Florida I lived a total of 18 years. Finally , moved to France in 2003 ,Versailles call me for its royalty, and working in Paris was great. It was time to seek frontiers again and moved to Brech near Auray, Morbihan in Brittany , and later move to not too far Pluvigner. Total so far in France has been 20 years, and counting.   1. I really like the way the riverbanks are being developed as a new place to stroll, the Madrid Rio, as if to try and disperse the crowds of tourists congregating in the city centre.
