I had come by here several times over the years but not really going in depth until 2017! It is time this wonderful church basilica located in the plaza de Jesus near the Westin Palace hotel , and my fav Cerveceria Cervantes (see posts) it’s about time it is shown again. This is Madrid! One of the most popular churches in the city, let me tell you a bit more on the Church Basilica de Jesus de Medinaceli of Madrid, part II !!!Hope you enjoy the post as I.

This is one of five basilicas in Madrid, and is located on the site of the previous Convento de Trinitarios Descalzos de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación or convent of the barefoot Trinitarian of Our Lady of the Incarnation founded April 7 1606 by the Duke of Lerma, and later private of king Felipe III , later the Duke of Medinaceli .Soon he began to be better known in the city by the name of Jesus Nazareno, since inside he was guarded an image of Jesus who was captive in Fez and was rescued by the Trinitarians in 1682. Later, and due to the Board of Trustees of the Duke , the church will be known by the name of Jesus of Medinaceli. It is ,also, the seat of the order of the Archicofradia Primaria de la Real e Ilustre Esclavitud de Nuestro Padre Jésus Nazareno de Medinaceli; b. 1710 ,( best in English: Primary Arch Confraternity of the Royal and Illustrious Slavery of Our Father Jésus Nazareno de Medinaceli), yes it is long just say the fraternity of the Jesus of Nazareth for short. The current Church Basilica of Jesus of Nazareth has three nave with the larger one in the middle, all done in a baroque style. There is a statue of Jesus of Nazareth in the corner of the basilica facing the street.

During the War of Independence in Spain, the church was practically destroyed, so during the reign of Fernando VII he proceeded to its reedification. In 1836, when the works had not yet been finished, the church was confiscated and was unused until in 1843 it was returned to the Duke of Medinaceli by right of reversal. Then, the Duke gave it to the nuns of the Knight of Grace who at that time were without their own building. In 1890, after the demolition of the convent of San Antonio del Prado, the convent of Jesus went to house that community of Capuchinos. Since then they inhabit and run, except during the Spanish Civil War years, The current Church Basilica of Jesus of Medinaceli was solemnly consecrated on November 21, 1930 the Church was erected in parish on January 26, 1966 Pope Paul VI raised the temple to Basilica Minor, on September 1, 1973.

The image of Jesus Nazareno began to be known as Medinaceli thanks to the fact that the chapel in which he was staying was in some land assigned by the Duke of Medinaceli. In procession out just behind Jesus of Medinaceli, goes the Virgin of the Dolorosa leaves the basilica, and is entertained with a beautiful Saeta. A must see is the Christ of Medinacelidone in the 17C with brilliant workmanship of venerable artists from Seville . TheDuke of Medinacelibuilt a chapel in 1689 in honor of the statue. After the war of Independence in Spain the church was almost destroyed and the Duke’s mother decided to erect a church first in 1890 from which the church grew and now basilica. The image almost did not survive the Spanish Civil War, and needed to be taken out of Spain, even to France; the survival of the icon, despite its difficulties, has augmented its veneration.
