My personal memories of San Sebastiàn !!!

I bring you down to the Basques of Spain, my route for many years between France and Spain, Incidentilly, the first time in this City was while on the beaches of the Médoc in Bordeaux and we decided back in 1992 to come down for a closer look always in my road warrior mode. The choices are endless and very nice spots as we walked all over once in town, I like to bring older pictures from my vault that I feel needed to be in my blog, for the memories of always, Therefore, here is my personal memories of San Sebastiàn !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.

At La Bretxa covered market you have shops and a multitude of traditional stalls, thus bringing together small producers and some of the best-known brands under one historic roof. The market dates from 1870. The story goes that at the beginning of the 18C, the city was assaulted by the troops of the Duke of Berwik, in this action the troops opened two breaches in the wall and one hundred years later on August 31, 1813, the Anglo-Portuguese soldiers took the city by this very spot, this is the reason why La Bretxa (breach) receives this name. Later the Edificio de la Pescadería (fish market) was built, which stands at the back separated from the main building by a square where the fishermen was located to sell their products. The transformation of La Bretxa has already begun. The changes in the covered market building give way to the works of the market square and the Pescadería building that will soon change the way of living La Bretxa,so stay tune.

The Playa Ondarreta beach located on the La Concha Bay, been the most westernmost of the local beaches ,and the shortest, although thanks to its location its average width is greater than that of La Concha beach because it is less exposed to tidal variations. In fact, although it is less than half the length of La Concha beach, its average area of 60,000 m2 is 6,000 m2 larger than that of the latter. The Ondarreta promenade, which borders the beach, has several sections with the famous La Concha gate, while others are open to the beach, the difference in levels between the two being a few meters. Along with the promenade there are gardens in which there is a sculpture statue of Queen Maria Christina of Austria done in 1942. The buildings whose facades overlook the promenade are low in height: they are independent villas with few floors.

The port of San Sebastián is located in the bay of La Concha, at the foot of the Sacred Heart statue that crowns Mount Urgull , and very near the Aquarium. Its modern construction began in the second half of the 15C, Currently the port of San Sebastián has two docks: one for fishing and the other for sports. The sports dock has little capacity, and the sports fleet is forced to anchor in La Concha Bay during the summer. This is the dock projected by Peironcely in the mid-19C, and the one that for more than a hundred years welcomed commercial trafic, ceasing to function as such in the 1970s. . It is a small triangular-shaped port, with a fishing dock and another recreational dock. The 400 existing berths are permanently occupied, making it very difficult to accommodate foreign vessels, although there is a safe anchorage in the bay of La Concha.

The Victoria Eugenia Theater is located on Calle República Argentina, 2, one of the most central areas of the city. Named in honor of Victoria Eugénia de Battenberg, which in a historical perspective she was the wife of King Alfonso XIII, she was Queen of Spain from 1906 to 1931. She is the granddaughter of Queen Victoria and the niece of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom. The former King of Spain, Juan Carlos Iᵉʳ, is her grandson. This neo-Renaissance style theater was built in 1909 at the same time as the Hotel María Cristina, when San Sebastian was living its golden age as a vacation spot for the aristocracy. In the main hall, covered by a vault and decorated with frescoes, many zarzuela shows have been held. A catalyst for local artistic creation, it is also the seat of the Jazz Festival and the Quinzaine Musicale. Steeped in history, the theater has witnessed, since its inauguration in 1912, the main cultural events of the city. Restored and reopened in 2007 after a process that lasted 6 years, it was transformed into an innovative stage space equipped with the most modern equipment and services without losing its original character and charm, and the characteristics of the time. The main room has a total capacity of 888 seats and the Club room has a capacity of 120 people seated and 180 standing. In addition, it has several multipurpose spaces to celebrate activities related to the performing arts and other types of events. All these spaces can be rented.
