The Iglesia de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora of Arcas del Villar !!!

I like to tell you more of this off the beaten path town in my dear Castilla La Mancha, Kingdom of Spain, I have written before on the church, but found me more pictures that should be in my blog, We drove many years around here with wonderful memories of my dear late wife Martine and the boys, always on the road warrior ways to find jewels in the  lands of Don Quijote! We arrived in the Province of Cuenca to the nice small town of Arcas del Villar  and its wonderful Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Natividad or the Church Our Lady of the Nativity . I like to tell you a bit more on it, and hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Arcas del Villar is located 11 km from the city of Cuenca, and we arrived on the CM-220 highway to take the CM-2100 detour, a road that surrounds the urban center. This road ends in the vicinity of Motilla del Palancar, passing through towns such as Valeria, Buenache de Alarcón, Hontecillas or Olmedilla de Alarcón. These towns, together with Villar del Saz de Arcas, makes up the City/town hall of Arcas del Villar.

The Romanesque Church of Our Lady of the Nativity is located in the Plaza del Consistorio, bordering Calle Mayor, Calle de Gasset and Plaza de la Paz, in the urban center of the town. The Church or Iglesia de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora is in the Roman style turning into Gothic from the 13C. The exterior has a flat wall annex to the main building with arches to hold three bells and the front door romanique with five arches. This Church of Our Lady of the Nativity is a rare Romanesque specimen because of its situation quite south of the area of expansion of this style in the Iberian Peninsula.

The head of the temple is separated from the nave by a large main arch, in the form of a diaphragm arch, this being semicircular, made of ashlar stone and supported by pilasters on imposts. The wooden choir is located at the feet. A vault built at the beginning of the 17C covers the north chapel. The church has a side chapel built in 1623, which protrudes from the line of the north wall façade.

Inside, illuminated by the few openings offered by its strong walls, the visitor can delight in the magnificent coffered ceiling that covers the ceiling of the single nave and pass under a fantastic semicircular triumphal arch to access the presbytery. There are two images to which the faithful devoutly come to worship in this church, that of the Virgen de la Higa (fig) ,and that of Christ.
